Bostaden, med sina två rum med 1950-tals interiör så som den kan ha tett sig strax innan sista vaktmästarfamiljen flyttade ut. Vaktmästarbostaden iordningställdes med denna inredning i samband med den omfattande inre renoveringen av museet som gjordes 1992-94.
När Adolf Andersohn sökte finansiering för byggande av Vänersborgs museum föreslog han att museet skulle innehålla en vaktmästarbostad för en vaktmästare gemensam för museet och det intilliggande läroverket. Dessa planer realiserades och vaktmästarbostaden har fram till 1961 hyst fyra olika vaktmästarfamiljer.
Vaktmästartjänsten innefattade en mängd vitt skilda arbetsuppgifter såsom dagligt underhåll och tillsyn, biljettförsäljning, visningar, städning, ordnande och katalogisering av samlingar, utställningsbygge och på senare år även vissa konserveringsarbeten. Under de första årtiondena var den kanske viktigaste uppgiften att hålla värmen i museet. Det eldades med kol, koks och ved varför det krävdes tillsyn dygnet runt.
De skiftande arbetsuppgifterna klarades inte enbart på halvtid varför vaktmästarens familj ofta fick hjälpa till. Hustrun och barnen fick inte sällan skura golv, sälja biljetter, registrera föremål eller ta emot förfrågningar från besökande.
Efter det att vaktmästaren flyttat från museet inreddes vaktmästarbostaden till arkiv och personalrum. Ända fram till slutet av 1960-talet kom den även att tjäna som provisorisk bostad för tillfälligt anställd personal. Vaktmästarbostaden har därefter nyttjats som såväl personalrum, kontor och modellverkstad.
