HistoryFrån sjukstuga till länslasarett
År 1744 föreslog Jonas Alströmer (1685–1761)
att man i Alingsås skulle inrätta ett hospital
där de fattigaste och sjukaste skulle tas omhand.
Exakt när verksamheten kom till stånd är oklart
men den var i bruk under 1760-talet.
Men det var en inrättning för fattiga och hemlösa
som var sjuka.
Hade man redan en säng och tak över huvudet
var det där man vårdades vid sjukdom.
Den förste utbildade läkaren i Alingsås
var Jonas Gunnarsson Kruse (1697–1742).
Han hade studerat medicin i Lund
och fick anställning av Alingsås manufakturverk
som ansvarig för plantagerna och som företags-läkare.
Efter Kruses död 1742 och under hela1800-talet
fortsatte en rad olika stads-läkare att arbeta i Alingsås.
Men fortfarande fanns det inget
vad vi skulle kalla för sjukhus.
När koleran härjade på 1830- och 50-talen
inrättades provisoriska sjukstugor;
främst för att försöka hindra smittspridning.
Det skulle dröja till 1910
innan staden fick ett riktigt sjukhus.
Då invigdes Älvsborgs läns länslasarett i Alingsås.
Redan 1902 kom det önskemål från Alingsås
genom borgmästare Zimdahl
att få en sjukstuga till Alingsås.
Men planer på ett länslasarett 1904
gjorde att det önskemålet lämnades åt sidan.
Det var fler kommuner i länet
som ville att lasarettet
skulle byggas i just deras kommun,
men det var till slut Alingsås som vann.
Överklaganden och en storstrejk
medförde att invigningen dröjde till 1910
då de 101 vårdplatserna kunde fyllas med patienter.
Lasarettet byggdes på jordbruksmark i Sörhaga
med kor och hästar betandes runtomkring dess staket.
Vid lasarettet anlades en köksträdgård
och planteringar med fruktträd.
Största delen av det som odlades
användes i den egna verksamheten
och överskottet såldes och vinsten gick till lasarettet.
Under åren som följde växte
verksamheten med tillbyggnader
och nya avdelningar och funktioner.
1967 revs sista återstoden
av den ursprungliga sjukhusbyggnaden.
Under åren har lasarettet
byggts ut och om flera gånger.
En pågående ombyggnation
beräknas vara klar 2020.■
