Carolina Amalia Olsson 1851–1910
Från fotoateljé till hamncafé
I början av 1870-talet går hon i utbildning hos fotograf Nordlöw i Sundsvall i en ateljé hon sedan övertar. Efter några år flyttar hon till en egen ateljé med bostad på Sjögatan 142, idag Sjögatan 20. Takfönstren till ateljén ligger mot norr för att få ett mjukt och jämnt ljus.
Carolina gifter sig med trävaruhandlaren Jämt-Johansson och blir därmed omyndig. Hennes make får istället titeln fotograf och står som ägare till fotoverksamheten.
Hennes man köper det Hellbergska huset på Storgatan 33 med en fotoateljé som Carolina låter renovera. Måndag 25 juni 1888 ska den invigas men branden kommer före, strax efter klockan 12 samma dag kommer ett första larm in till Bellbolagets växel på husets tredje våning. Sju timmar senare ligger staden i aska. Huset återställs och i en tidningsannons kan Sundsvallsborna läsa att Carolina erbjuder förstoringar i ”närmast kroppsstorlek”.
18 januari 1895 sker den stora katastrofen i hennes liv. Hennes man reser iväg med tåget norrut för att göra skogsaffärer i Finland. Under kvällen på tåget blir han rånmördad. Hela huset sätts i konkurs då han har stora lån. Kamerautrustningen och all rekvisita sätts upp som makens tillgångar och hon förlorar dem i konkursboet. Hon övertar och driver nu Hamncaféet på Sjögatan 2, där hon hyr både lägenhet och lokal av änkan Jäderberg. Livet måste gå vidare.
