Johanna Brunsson föddes i Valbo Ryr, Dalsland år 1846 där hon tidigt kom att visa talang för vävkonsten.
Med stöd av landshövding Eric Sparre kunde hon på 1880-talet öppna vävskola i Vänersborg. Efter några år flyttades verksamheten till Stockholm dit hon lockade elever från hela landet. Kraven på eleverna var omvittnat hårda och vid skolan rådde sträng disciplin. Vad man arbetade med var framförallt utveckling av vävtekniken, mönster gärna hämtades ur historiska samlingar på bl.a. Nordiska museet.
Johanna Brunssons systerdotter Alma Jacobson flyttade från Färgelanda, Dalsland till Stockholm och började som elev på vävskolan. När Johanna Brunsson avled år 1920 tog Alma Jacobson över verksamheten. Alma Jacobson hade då arbetat som lärare, yrkesvävare och försäljare på vävskolan.
Fram till sin nedläggning på 1950-talet var Johanna Brunssons vävskola legendarisk vad gällde svensk textilutbildning.
Mellan åren 1889-1909 låg skolan på Birger Jarlsgatan 27, (före detta Norrlandsgatan 37). 1909 revs huset och skolan flyttade till Kungsgatan 70.
