Detta fotografi är en del av den samling som inkom från Vänerskolan till Regionmuseum Västra Götaland (f.d. Älvsborgs länsmuseum) år 2003.
Tidigt blev Vänersborg känd som sjukvårdsstad samt ort för specialskolor. En av de främsta av dessa skolor var inriktad på undervisning för döva och hörselskadade – Elfsborgs läns Dövstumskola, senare Vänerskolan.
Efter beslut av Älvsborgs läns landsting inrättades år 1877 en skola för hörselskadade och döva, då kallade dövstumma, barn i Vänersborg. Sina första lokaler fick skolan i den så kallade Villa Augusta, en doktorsvilla vid Vänersborgs lasarett. År 1885 fick man egna lokaler på Kyrkogatan 12 och i hård konkurrens med Göteborg beslutades att Det Fjärde Distriktets Dövstumskola skulle förläggas till Vänersborg. En för ändamålet anpassad skolbyggnad uppfördes vid Edsvägen söder om staden och verksamheten kunde starta i nya lokaler 1896. Skolan kom snart också att öppna för undervisning av döva med flerhandikapp och under ledning av lärar- och rektorsparet Elisabeth Anrep-Nordin och Fredrik Nordin utvecklades en internationellt uppmärksammad pedagogik.
Skolan bedrev även en betydelsefull yrkesutbildning som borgade för elevernas framtida sysselsättning inom något hantverk. År 1965 bytte skolan namn till Vänerskolan.
