Bilden är tagen vid eftersökning med metalldetektor i sjön Vidöstern efter att ett svärd hittats. Metalldetektorundersökningarna gjordes av personal från Jönköpings läns museum, Länsstyrelsen i Jönköpings län samt av medlemmar från Sveriges metallsökarförening. På bilden syns den fibula som hittades.
Information om fyndet:
Sommaren 2018 hittade då 8-åriga Saga ett svärd på botten av sjön Vidöstern vid familjens sommarstuga i Tånnö utanför Värnamo. Hon hjälpte pappan med båten när hon klev på något på botten. Saga lyfte upp föremålet ur vattnet och ropade på sin pappa att hon hittat ett svärd. När familjen förstod att det var gammalt kontaktades Jönköpings läns museum.
I efterhand har två kol-14 dateringar gjorts på svärdet: dels från svärdsskidan 650 – 770 e.Kr., dels från handtaget; 770 – 970 e.Kr, vilket placerar svärdet i vendel - vikingatid.
Vid två tillfällen hösten 2018 gjordes efterundersökningar med metalldetektorer på platsen. Ytterligare ett par intressanta föremål hittades då, dels en fibula i silver, dels ett litet koniskt föremål i bly – kanske en vikt. En fibula är ett dräktsmycke, man kan kalla det en kombination av en brosch och en säkerhetsnål, avsedd att hålla samman klädesplagg på överkroppen. Just detta exemplar har daterats till 300 – 400-tal e.Kr., yngre romersk järnålder – folkvandringstid.
I samband med en av metalldetektorundersökningarna bjöds lokalpressen in för att träffa arkeologerna och även Saga som fick berätta om sitt fynd. Det dröjde sedan inte länge innan nyheten hade spridits till både nationell och internationell press. Saga och svärdet hade blivit en världsnyhet.
