HistorySveriges kristnande följdes av en intensiv kyrkobyggnadsverksamhet. Under medeltiden uppfördes över 1100 nya kyrkor i landet, ett sätt att befästa övergången från hedendomen till kristendom. Kunskapen om hur den kyrkliga organisationen infördes i dessa delar av landet, och vem det var som lät uppföra de tidigaste kyrkorna är mycket begränsad. Enligt en skriftlig källa fanns det fem kyrkor i Askims härad under 1200-talet, och man anser att en av dessa var kyrkan i Kållered. Med kristendomen kom kyrkorna och socknarna - en ny administrativ enhet, som under medeltiden infördes över hela landet. Det intensiva kyrkobyggandet var ett sätt att befästa den nya religionen och den därmed sammanhörande nya organisationen, och kyrkorna uppfördes ofta på en central plats i bygden. De placerades ofta på en upphöjd plats i landskapet, gärna på eller invid äldre kultplatser.
Detta stämmer väl in på Kållereds kyrka, som ligger på höjden av en ås, alldeles i närheten av ett äldre gravfält. Den medeltida kyrkans utformning är inte känd, endast delar av långhuset finns kvar från den äldre perioden. Dagens kyrkobyggnad fick sin huvudsakliga utformning under 1600-talet då en mängd om- och tillbyggnader genomfördes: nya fönsteröppningar togs upp i muren, taket lades om, i öster byggdes ett nytt kor, och i väster uppfördes ett vapenhus. Även klockstapeln och kyrkstallet tillkom under denna period. På 1740-talet försågs den omgärdande kyrkomuren med tre överbyggda entréer – s.k. stigportar. Portarna uppfördes i anslutning till de olika kyrkvägar, som från olika väderstreck ledde upp till området.
Under 1700-talets senare del utökades kyrkoanläggningen med två fristående gravkor, uppförda åt familjerna Almroth och Bagge. Den dåtida kyrkoplatsen avgränsades i norr av en stenmur som löpte alldeles intill kyrkoväggen, och Bagges gravkor byggdes strax innanför muren. Bagges gravkor fungerar numera som sakristia, och förenas med kyrkan genom en glasad gång. Det Almrothska gravkoret hamnade delvis utanför kyrkomuren, vilket vittnar om att det var ont om begravningsplatser på kyrkogården. Området norr om kyrkan användes inte som kyrkogård i äldre tider. Det ansågs vanhedrande att bli begravd på kyrkans norra sida, och därför användes området endast för ”självspillingar och
ogärningsmän”. Huruvida det fanns några sådana gravar på Kållereds kyrkogård är inte känt. Den äldre, norra kyrkomuren revs i samband med att kyrkogården utvidgades under 1920-talet.
Många av gårdarna hade i äldre tid fasta gravplatser, en tradition som fortfarande lever kvar. Kållered utgör en av de få kyrkogårdar där det fortfarande finns bevarade gravstenar, som kan berätta om denna äldre sed. Utöver dessa gårdsvis ordnade gravar, som i sig utgör ett intressant dokument över äldre gravseder, innehar Kållereds kyrka också en av landets största samling av gravstenar från 1600- och 1700-talen. Samlingen omfattar ett femtiotal gravstenar. som idag kan beskådas inne i Almroths gravkor. Tidigare stod de lutade mot kyrkomuren, där de placerades då de tjänat ut och gravplatsen skulle tas i anspråk för en ny gravläggning.
Det är framför allt den välbevarade helhetsmiljön, som gör Kållereds kyrka så intressant. Efter 1600- och 1700-talets förändringar och nybyggnationer har endast mindre ändringar utförts, och området har därför bevarat sin dåtida karaktär. I kommunens övriga socknar revs de äldre kyrkorna under 1800-talet, och Kållereds kyrkomiljö utgör därför den enda bevarade kyrkoanläggningen, som finns kvar från äldre tid.
