En av alla svenskar som klev ombord på Titanic var Mauritz Ådahl från Asarum i Blekinge. Som 20-åring tog Mauritz arbete på en båt i Karlshamn och hamnade i Holmsund i Västerbotten där han arbetade i en skeppshandel. Här träffade han Emelie Grönlund som han blev tillsammans med, och hade en önskan att emigrera med till Amerika. Emelies familj motsatte sig dock detta, så det blev så att Mauritz åkte själv till Amerika.
Han hamnade i New York och livnärde sig som maskinist, samtidigt som han hade flitig brevkontakt med Emelie hemma i Sverige. Efter tre år, 1906, så lyckades Mauritz övertala Emelie till att resa till honom i Amerika. Den 6 oktober samma år gifter de sig i Brooklyn där de är boende då, och två år senare föds den första dottern Vera, och ytterligare två år senare föds Georgia 1910.
Familjen kände och umgicks med en hel del andra svenska familjer, men Emelie trivdes inte riktigt bra i Amerika utan ville helst återvända hem till Sverige igen. Den 25 maj 1911 dog Mauritz far Ola så Emelie och barnen återvände då på hösten hem till Sverige för att hjälpa Olas änka Elna. Mauritz kom även han hem, då lagom till Jul som hela familjen firade tillsammans. Paret köpte då en bit mark intill föräldrahemmet med drömmen att kunna bygga ett eget hus.
Mauritz bestämde sig för att åter åka över till Amerika i hopp om att kunna tjäna ihop så mycket pengar så det räckte till ett eget hem åt familjen. Emelie och barn var dock inte med på denna resa. Väl framme i Southampton fick Mauritz veta att Amerikalinjens alla båtar låg upplagda, däribland Philadelphia som han hade biljett till. Det var kolstrejk i England och inga fartyg avgick, utom Titanic, till vilket Mauritz och många andra blev ombokade till.
I ett brev till Emelie skriver Mauritz:
”Hade jag vist att vi skulle legat här så länge hade jag ej rest så tidigt. Då hade jag stanadt hemma hos dig lilla Älskling några dagar mera.”
Mauritz omkom när Titanic förliste. Han hittades i vattnet den 24 april som kropp nummer 72. Man plockade av honom de personliga tillhörigheter han hade på sig, och skickade dessa hem till Emelie i Asarum. Bland Mauritz saker fanns ett fickur som stannat på 2.34, 14 minuter efter Titanics undergång. Då Mauritz var en tredje klassens passagerare, och saknade släktingar i Amerika, begravdes han till havs.
I brevet från Southampton, vilket alltså kom att bli Mauritz sista, skrev han följande:
”Här rätt många familjer med tre fyra barn i ålder med våra som skall resa till America. Ock då jag ser dem springa omkring kan jag se lilla Vera ock Georgia springa därhemma ock ropa pappa. Ja lilla Älskling jag har drömdt om eder därhemma ock blef så snopen då jag vaknade till ock kom ihåg att jag var så långt bort.”
Mauritz Ådahl hade en namnbricka på sig vid förlisningen som visas här.
