Denna flaska introducerades 1931 som modell M31 och är baserad på M1893 och M1907 som användes under första världskriget, men med mindre modifieringar. Ursprungligen tillverkades M31-flaskorna i aluminium, men senare, eftersom aluminium krävdes för andra mer viktiga föremål, så började de tillverkas i stål. I slutet av 1940, med det förestående tyska inträdet i den nordafrikanska kampanjen, ändrades det vanliga bruna filtöverdraget, läderremmarna och bärselen till ett olivfärgat filtöverdrag och remmar för att bättre klara slitage i det tropiska klimatet. En annan variant, som utvecklades i slutet av 1941, var att ersätta filtöverdraget med en plastimpreg-nerad träbeläggning för bättre hållbarhet. Vid utfärdandet kom flaskan med integrerade bärremmar och sele, samt att föreskrifterna föreskrev de olika sätten den skulle bäras på, den vanligaste formen, att den hängde från midjebältet, även om andra metoder också användes.
Denna fältflaska användes inte av Carl Edward Carlson i första världskriget då den introducerades först 1931. Den användes möjligen under andra världskriget, men då av tyska trupper, och då befann sig Carl Edward för övrigt i Sverige. Hur och var Carl Edward Carlson fått tag på denna fältflaska är okänt.
