Skulptur av trä föreställande stående helgon, den sörjande Maria - den så kallade "Öjamadonnan". Har ursprungligen flankerat triumfkrucifixet tillsammans med en skulptur av den sörjande Johannes i Öja kyrka.
Hon bär en lång klädnad med veckrik mantel som går upp över huvudet i ett dok och nästan helt täcker det fint vågiga håret. Dokets tyg rullas samman på axlarna i fint skurna snäckformade voluter. Enligt medeltidens mode för fotbeklädnader är hon iförd skor med spetsig avslutning framtill. Händerna är knäppta framför bröstet. Hon böjer sig lätt mot vänster, mot korset, i en position som erinrar om den antika kontraposten.
Skulpturen var tidigare övermålad med bronsfärg, och efter rengöring framträdde viss originalmålning - speciellt i ansiktet, men även på klädedräkten. Bäst bevarad är ansiktets karnation som är ljust rosa med hakan och kinderna tonade i djupare rosa färg och intensivt röd färg på läpparna. Skulpturens baksida är urtagen och där sitter en tunn träskiva över urtagningen.
Enligt Roosval i "Medeltida konst i Gotlands Fornsal" är bilden skuren i ek av den så kallade "Öjamästaren", som fått sitt namn av framställningen av kalvariegruppen i Öja kyrka vari denna skulptur ingår. Skulpturen dateras av Roosval till unggotiken, cirka 1260-1295.
Äldre forskning har fört henne till en fransk eller franskinfluerad mästare. Nyare forskning har däremot framhållit att verket företer tyska stilinfluenser med franskt ursprung som förmedlats till Gotland via Sachsen-Westfalen. Man kan dock inte med säkerhet uttala sig i proveniensfrågan.
Enligt originalkatalogen är madonnan köpt år 1843 av konsul C J Chausseur, vilken fått den efter sin morfar kyrkoherden i Öja, Nils Herlitz. "Således är bilden säkert tagen från Öja kyrka."
