Föremålet hittades under en rensning av ett förråd i Uppsala under hösten 2022 och stod märkt som ”okänt instrument”. Föremålet är en explosionspunktvisare från kalla kriget, även benämnt Ground Zero Indicator (GZI). Instrumentet användes för lägesbestämning av en kärnvapenexplosion med syftet att kunna sätta in rätt åtgärder beroende på om explosionen skett i luften eller i marknivå. Visarna placerades på fasta mätställen på ett berg eller betongfundament med fri sikt. Explosionspunktvisarna grupperades på ett avstånd på mellan fem och tio kilometer från varandra och kunde ställas upp i ett större mönster likt en rätsidig triangel.
Explosionens höjd och nollpunkt avgjordes genom att det intensiva ljuset trängde in genom små hål i den vita skyddshuven och svärtade ett fotografiskt papper inuti instrumentet. Det fotografiska pappret satt i rutnätsförsedda plastkassetter som sedan avlästes av särskilda observatörsgrupper.
Exemplaret tillverkades 1962 i Storbritannien av General Radiological Ltd. Föremålet var knutet till ledningscentralen (HC) Hästen i Uppsala och förpackningen är märkt Trönö vilket troligtvis haft att göra med att det avsågs användas i trakten kring Trönö i Söderhamns kommun i Hälsingland, vid den tiden tillhörande Uppsala stift.
Det fotografiska pappret inuti skyddshuven måste vid höjd beredskap bytas två gånger per dag för att inte påverkas av exempelvis fukt och dålig väderlek.
Den svenska verksamheten rörande civilförsvarets observationsplatser kan beskrivas på följande sätt: Civilförsvaret hade ett system med observationsplatser placerade i och omkring svenska städer. Vid de fasta observationsplatserna var huvuduppgiften att omedelbart rapportera till lokal civilförsvarsstab efter flyganfall. Man angav tidpunkt, typ av flygföretag, antal flygplan, plats där skador inträffat, dess art och omfattning. En observationsgrupp bestod av en gruppchef en ställföreträdande chef samt fyra observatörer.
På 1970-talet anlades ett antal friliggande skyddsrum samt även platser försedda med så kallade postkurer som observatörerna använde. Observatörerna indikerade och rapporterade även explosionsdata vid kärnladdningsexplosion, misstänkta anfall med kemiska stridsmedel samt utförde väderobservationer. Den utrustning de hade till sitt förfogande var bland annat radiostation R70, indikeringsväska, intensimeter 21, radiakräkneskiva, kikare, kompass, vindmätare, ABC-dräkt, Lufor-mottagare, syftinstrument, explosionspunktvisare, termometer, sin postkur och på många ställen även telefon. 1992 fanns det 28 stycken fasta observationsplatser och 8 rörliga i Stockholmsområdet med omnejd där de fasta rapporterade explosionsdata direkt till civilförsvarsstaben i närmaste kommun. Från de rörliga platserna rapporterades även övrig radioaktiv strålning och gasbeläggning. De flesta observationsplatser med tillhörande utrustning avvecklades under slutet av 1990-talet.
