Lodbasmätare används för att mäta avståndet till ett fartyg på havet vid ett fast kustartilleribatteri. På lodbasmätaren finns skalskruvar som ställs in och med hjälp av att veta egen höjd över havet, tillsammans med instrumentets inbyggda korrektion för jordrundningen, blir avståndet till vattenlinjen på fartyget som ska beskjutas cosinus på triangelnvinkeln som uppstår. På grund av optikens kapacitet begränsades det praktiska mätavståndet till cirka 5 000 meter.
Lodbasmätarna var allt som oftast placerade i torn vid de fasta batterierna, så kallade teodolittorn, men de kunde även användas vid rörliga enheter.
För att lodbasmätning ska fungera måste den egna höjden över havet vara noggrant inmätt. I teodolittornen gjöts därför oftast in en stålplatta för att garantera höjden. Vid förändrat tidvatten måste instrumentet justeras och vid stor sjöhävning försämras kvalitén på mätningen.

Detta exemplar av lodbasmätare har givits i pensionsgåva till byrådirektör John-Erik Nilsson som arbetade med utveckling av fast artilleri, främst i Stockholmsområdet. Överlämnad som gåva till Marinmuseum från Nilssons dotter Maria Sandberg, 2014-03-19, efter att båda föräldrarna avlidit.
