De mest inflytelserika av Beethovens mecenater i Wien var baron Gottfried von Switen (1733-1803) , greve Johan Georg von Browne-Camus (1767-1827) , och framför allt, furst Karl Lichnowsky (1756-1814) och hans gemål, furstinnan Christiane (1765- 1841).
Karl Lichnowsky var Beethovens mecenat framför alla andra och förblev så i mer än ett decennium. Hans hem var ett centrum för musiker, kompositörer och musikkännare, och det var vid hans musikaliska soiréer som Beethovens verk först spelades.
