Claes Adelsköld föddes i Alingsås 1824, familjen bodde på egendomen Nolhaga.Redan 1829 flyttade familjen därifrån när föräldrarna tvingades lämna Nolhaga till en fordringsägare.
Familjen flyttade in till Drottninggatan, och Claes gick sina första skolår i Alingsås. Han var tidigt intresserad av teknik och naturvetenskaperna och kunde senare kombinera sin yrkesmilitära bana med sina intressen när Väg- och Vattenbyggnadskåren inrättades 1851. Där arbetade han fram till 1875 och var bland annat med och byggde över 300 mil järnväg. Åren 1876—1893 tillhörde Claes Adelsköld riksdagens första kammare. Där var han aktiv med motioner i bland annat frågor om fred och försvar.
Utöver sitt arbete skrev och komponerade han flera musikstycken och gav ut ett trettiotal böcker och skrifter i många olika ämnen, bland annat en självbiografi i fyra band. Claes Adelsköld var även en aktiv fotograf och en av stiftarna av Fotografiska Föreningen 1889.
1877 köpte Claes Adelsköld sitt gamla barndomshem, Nolhaga. Han rev den gamla mangårdsbyggnaden och byggde i dess ställe en villa 1879, det som vi idag kallar Nolhaga slott. Familjen bodde där endast ett par år innan gården såldes och de flyttade vidare, från Alingsås till Stockholm.
Claes Adelsköld avled 1907.
