Luren är använd i Tuthult eller Öjebomåla i Gullabo socken i Småland.
Föremålet är knutet till en muntlig tradition om hur Gullabo fått sitt namn, traditionen berättar om pesten som härjade i trakten år 1350. Sägnen berättar om hur flera av ortsnamnen i Gullabo kom till.

Sägenomspunnen näverlur från Gullabo
En del föremål i samlingarna åtföljs av spännande berättelser eller traditioner. Så är det med en näverlur som kommer från Gullabo i södra Kalmar län. Sägnen berättar om hur flera av ortsnamnen i Gullabo kom till.
När pesten på sommaren 1350 gick härjande fram över vårt land, lämnade den i socknen kvar endast en ung kvinna. Här satt hon nu ensam i skogen. Varje dag hämtade hon vatten ur Blå källan, men en dag fann hon, att dess vatten började sina. Det var farliga tecken, ty den dag källan sinade, skulle hennes släkt dö ut. Förfärad gav hon sig ut med sin näverlur i skogarna och lät dess genomträngande toner dallra ut åt alla väderstreck för att påkalla hjälp. Samtidigt strövade i skogarna en man vid namn Bonde Gul. Även han hade blivit ensam på sin faders gård i Långasjö i Värend och givit sig ut för att få kontakt med människor. Han drog sig åt sydost nedåt de väldiga gränsskogarna mellan Småland och Blekinge, och där hörde han en dag näverlurens vemodsfyllda toner. Så fann dessa båda varandra. Han stannade, de gifte sig, och efter sin fädernegård Öjaby gav han gården namnet Öjabymåla, som senare blev Öjabomåla. Blå källan började åter flöda, sedan regn nu fallit, och sedan dess har den ej sinat. Näverluren, som Bonde Guls hustru tutat i, gick länge i arv inom släkten. Den skog, där de unga tu möttes, kallade de Tuthult. Där byggdes längre fram i tiden en gård av ett av Bonde Guls barnbarn. Så har Öjabomåla och Tuthult fått sina namn och efter Bonde Gul skall alltså Gullabo ha fått sitt namn.
Förutom att berättelsen är spännande och fantasieggande är den intressant som förklaringssägen till uppkomsten av flera orts- och gårdsnamn i socknen och hur den kopplas till ett föremål. Eftersom ett verkligt föremål spelar en avgörande roll i berättelsen har sägnen tillförts trovärdighet och därmed fått större betydelse. Att berättelsen har knutits till ett föremål av betydligt senare datum, är inte ovanligt. Trots detta är berättelsen väl värd att hålla vid liv.
Näverluren är gjord av trä och näver. Själva röret består av två skålade trähalvor som hålls ihop tätt lindat med näver. Den här typen av lurar användes vanligen som hjälpmedel att samla ihop djuren med när de gick fritt på bete i till exempel skogsmark. De användes också som i sägnen för att kommunicera över långa sträckor, särskilt inom fäbodnäringen.
Näverluren skänktes till Kalmar läns museum på 1870-talet.
