I samband med ombyggnation av väg E4 förbi Markaryd gjordes en särksild arkeologisk undersökning av en medeltida skogsgård med järnframställning och fossil åkermark. På 1200-talet kom en familj till Högahylte. De röjde undan den täta bokskogen och bakom huset anlade de långsmala tegar för odling och betesmarker. Förutom jordbruk och boskapsskötsel försörjde man sig på att tillverka och sälja järn och kolstål, främst till Danmark. Mycket såldes på marknader eller i handelsstäder där man kunde köpa eller byta till sig andra varor. Analys av keramikskärvor som hittades på gården visar att man dukade med fat som var tillverkade i Helsingborg. Efter bara 100 eller 150 år övergavs gården. Antagligen är den ett typiskt exempel för hur den medeltida kolonisationen kan ha fungerat i stora delar av Småland.
Inom området fanns även senare historiska lämnigar i form av tjärrännor och en kolbotten, samt spår av en boplatse från stenåldern.
