Smeden Carl Johan Carlsson (1867-1953) kom till Gävle 1918 och började måla på äldre dagar. Han hade fört ett kringflackande liv och vid sidan av sitt smedsyrke arbetat som skomakare, stenslipare, urmakare, uppfinnare och handelsresande, men även som sångare. I Gävle satte Carlsson upp ett kafé vid Dammbron, gick runt på gårdarna och spelade positiv och dragspel, sålde ballonger eller tavlor han lutat mot positivet. Carlsson, som kallade sig Hofmålaren efter ett tackbrev från hovet, tyckte att tavelmåleri var rena barnleken i jämförelse med smidesyrket.
Carlsson använde värdeperspektiv, det vill säga att det konstnären anser är viktigt målar han större än det som är mindre viktigt.
C. sågs av sin samtid som original, men på senare tid har han fått upprättelse. Hans tavlor har visats på utställningar i utlandet som exempel på äktnaiv konst och finns med i senare tiders konstböcker. Hofmålaren har uppmärksammats även lokalt och finns representerad bland annat på Länsmuseet. En separatutställning arrangerades 1960.

När han sedan en bit upp i åren började måla tavlor flinade folk åt hans barnsliga stil, hans skeva perspektiv och plottriga detaljer. Man fnös föraktfullt åt tokstollen som avbildade en del saker alldeles för stora och andra ynkligt små. Och som använde linjal när han målade hästar för att ryggarna skulle bli raka. Men så en dag insåg plötsligt stadens och landets – ja, till och med världens – konstexperter att den gamle målarkludden i Gävle i själva verket var en stor artist, snudd på ett geni. Naivist förstås, men ändå. 1960 samlade man ihop över hundra av Carlssons tavlor och ordnade en utställning på museet i Gävle. Och året därpå skickades fem av bilderna till Schweiz för att representera Sverige på en internationell salong. Hans konst visades också på utställningar i Stockholm och Uppsala tillsammans med verk av storheter som Ernst Josephson och den franske impressionisten Renoir. Fotografier av Carlssons målningar trycktes sedan i en stor amerikansk konstkatalog och en av hans bilder användes som affisch för en utställning i Paris. Men det var så dags då. Stackars Carlsson blev nästan 86 år gammal men hann ändå inte uppleva ett uns av framgången. Han dog i januari 1953 och ödets ironi gjorde att en av hans tavlor ställdes ut på stadens museum bara ett par månader senare. Och att konstnären då, för första gången, fick uppskattande kommentarer. I över trettio år hade Carlsson försörjt sig som smed när han 1918 anlände till Gävle och tillträdde tjänsten som smidesmästare vid Yströms vagn- och velocipedfabrik. Han startade sedan en egen verkstad i Bomhus, men 1923 hände en olycka – en brännskada av något slag – som fördärvade synen på den då 56-årige Carl Johan Carlsson. Åtminstone på ena ögat, för det sägs att han under resten av livet hade ett emaljöga. Handikappet innebar att han måste lägga av med det tunga jobbet som smed, men han var inte blindare än att han nu med liv och lust kunde inleda en karriär som tavelmålare. Samtidigt hyrde han en liten markbit av Gävle stad vid kraftverksdammen i Strömdalen. Där snickrade han ihop en enkel kiosk av några bräder och med ett startkapital på 17 öre började han sälja godis och annat till de unga män som gjorde lumpen på Kungsbäck. Men den här verksamheten pågick nog inte så länge för snart började Carlsson synas ute på stan var och varannan dag. Han stod ofta på Stortorget eller vid Centralplan och sålde sina egenhändigt målade tavlor. I bland ingick också färggranna ballonger och svettiga kolor i sortimentet. Tio kronor styck ville han ha för sina konstverk, men ibland nöjde han sig med en femma som i värsta fall kunde prutas ner till tre kronor. När kung Gustav V skulle fylla 75 år, det var 1933, målade Carl Johan Carlsson ett porträtt av majestätet i full uniform. Och inte nog med det – han skickade sedan konstverket till Kungliga slottet i Stockholm tillsammans med en tavla som föreställde kronprinsessan Louise. Efter en tid fick han svar från en tjänsteman vid hovet med ”Kronprinsessans uppriktiga och hjärtliga tack för det vackra porträttet som Carlsson målat å Hennes Kungl Höghet”. I brevet låg även 25 kronor. Gävletidningarna fick nys om saken och började kalla Carlsson för Hovmålaren, ett epitet som han knappast hade någonting emot. Den lokala pressen brukade skriva rätt välvilligt om honom, men en gång ansåg en av stadens redaktörer att den oförarglige artisten ”parasiterade på konsten”. Den mer etablerade och betydligt yngre Gävlekonstnären Juho Suni försvarade gubben offentligt och de blev vänner för livet. Suni tyckte dock att det var lite egendomligt att Carlsson alltid kallade honom för ”ingenjör Persson”, men insåg så småningom att den gamle blandade ihop honom med en annan av sina många bekanta. Ända sedan 1930-talet släpade Hovmålaren runt ett positiv som var monterat på ett underrede från en gammal barnvagn, där ena hjulet såg ut att kunna lossna när som helst. Maskinen hade tio melodier på repertoaren, varav ett par smäktande valser och några taktfasta marscher. Men de toner som Carlsson vevade fram på gator och gårdar var så hackiga och skärande att många slängde åt honom en slant för att han skulle sluta spela utanför just deras fönster. I slutet av 1940-talet säckade tydligen spelet ihop fullständigt och det blev lite tystare i stan under några år. Men på våren 1950 hördes återigen de bekanta tongångarna sedan Carlsson investerat 300 kronor i ett nytt spel. Nytt och nytt förresten, positivet var byggt i Lübeck 1888 och lät nästan lika påfrestande gällt i tonen som sin föregångare. Tillsammans med sin fru Maria bodde Carlsson i ett litet kyffe i hörnet Luthergatan–Sofiagatan på Söder, nära Dövstumskolan. Strax intill hade snickare Malm sin verkstad och där dök Hovmålaren ofta upp för att tigga åt sig masonitskivor att måla på. Carl Johan Carlsson tyckte om att skriva och gav ut sex böcker under åren 1895 till 1949. Tunna häften som trycktes i små upplagor och som i dag är svåra att få tag på. Ingen av dessa skrifter är väl något litterärt mästerverk precis, men inte mindre än fyra av dem är självbiografier och tillsammans ger de en god bild av författarens brokiga levnad. En del påståenden får vi kanske ta med en nypa salt, som att han vid två tillfällen under sin barndom i Sörmland överfölls av vargar och måste klättra upp i träd för att undkomma. Men om bara en bråkdel av det han berättar är sant är det ett gripande människoöde från ett svunnet Fattigsverige som möter oss. Motgångarna började redan innan han föddes i Ytterjärna socken i maj 1867. Fadern, som var styrman, krossades vid en olycka i hamnen och lämnade sin gravida hustru i djupaste armod. Direkt efter nedkomsten tvingades hon lämna sin son till en elak torparfamilj medan hon själv fick ta tjänst som amma hos en rik familj på ett av Sörmlands många gods. Först efter fem år kunde Carl Johan flytta hem till sin mor och hennes nye man. Efter en torftig skolgång varvat med hårt arbete började han som sotarlärling och fick som spinkig elvaåring krypa in i trånga skorstenar och knacka bort sot. Samma år lärde han sig dricka brännvin ”samt många knep som jag inte hade en aning om tidigare”. I tidiga tonåren luffade Carl Johan runt i Mellansverige och arbetade sedan som dräng på stor gård tills han började gå i lära hos en smed i Eskilstuna. Innan han var fyllda tjugo flackade han runt i Finland och Sverige, arbetade korta perioder i olika smedjor men provade också på en hel del andra jobb. Under hela sitt liv hade Carl Johan Carlsson ett hetsigt humör och han rök ofta ihop med sina arbetsgivare, ibland redan första dagen på ett nytt ställe. De gånger han inte fick sparken tröttnade han snart och drog vidare till nya platser. Och till nya konflikter och bakslag. Ibland uppträdde han som misslynt anställd och drog igång fackföreningar för få sina rättigheter tillgodosedda. För att veckan efter etablera sig som fabrikör med egen verkstad. Men överallt lurade falska vänner och skurkaktiga kompanjoner. Eller också var det bara olyckliga omständigheter som gjorde att det alltid gick åt helvete. Även på det privata planet drabbades Carlsson av stora sorger. Han blev änkeman tre gånger, ett av hans barn dog efter bara några månader och en åttaårig son råkade ut för en olyckshändelse som var så svår att det var på vippen att pojkens båda armar måste amputeras. Ja, berättelsen om Hovmålarens glädjelösa liv kan fortsätta hur länge som helst. Men nu tycker jag det är dags att runda av, kanske med samma ord som Carl Johan Carlsson själv avslutade en av sina böcker: ”Det vore nog mycket mera att skriva om men jag tycker det kan vara nog för denna gång”.
