Arne Isacsson är en central gestalt inom nordisk akvarellkonst. Under flera decennier har han balanserat en konstnärligt betydelsefull gärning mot en pedagogisk. Vid 88 års ålder är han fortfarande verksam som konstnär och pedagog. Han har haft ett stort inflytande på akvarellkonsten och dess spridning från 1970-talet och framåt och bidragit till ett förnyat intresse för ämnet. Som grundare av Gerlesborgsskolorna i Bohuslän och Stockholm har han under sextio år vidgat gränserna för utbildning inom konst.
I akvarellen utnyttjas ofta papprets vithet som ljusbärande element. Det som framförallt karaktäriserar Arne Isacssons akvarellmåleri är att han utnyttjar pigmentens egenskaper,
där han experimenterar och låter även de mörka pigmenten vara ljusbärande. Motivet är ofta det bohuslänska landskapet - som han är djupt förtrogen med - där berg, hav och ljus skildras med teknisk briljans. Provence och andra nordliga landskap är också platser han återvänder till.
Han har även vidareutvecklat akvarelltekniken genom sina akvarellmonotypier, en metod som kan liknas vid grafik eftersom bilden skapas via ett avtryck. Här använder han tunna handgjorda papper som skrynklas, där pigment och vattenflöden pressas in. Färgpigmentens olika karaktär bildar fina färgstråk i papperets veck och en nästan fotografisk djupverkan uppstår. Formationerna, som kan liknas vid berg eller sprickbildningar, tillkommer genom en mer eller mindre slumpartad process, där konstnären sedan väljer eller kasserar i det stora materialet. Monotypierna är abstrakta i sin karaktär och har en stor expressiv verkan. I offentliga utsmyckningar från senare år har Arne Isacsson använt sig av akvarellmonotypi som sammanfogats i collageteknik till större mer monumentala verk.
Arne Isacsson har under senare år även intresserat sig för mer samtida uttryck, då han gjort scenografier i samarbete med Carmen Olssons solobuthodansföreställning "Ur Mörker". I denna stora och heltäckande retrospektiva utställning visar han verk från 1930-talet och framåt. Det blir teckningar från den nämnda perioden, tidiga oljemålningar, akvareller från sex årtionden, akvarellmonotypier från tjugo års laborationer med denna nya teknik, skisser och offentlig konst.
Dessutom kommer videovisning att ingå i utställningen. Anita Midbjer, Umeå universitiet, har filmat Arne Isacsson för en kommande avhandling: "Arne Isacsson - konstnär pedagog folkbildare". Hon gör också tillsammans med Kjell-Ove Grönlund en persondokumentär om Arne Isacsson, varav ett mindre utsnitt kan ses i utställningen.
