Veckotidningen Folket i Bild (FIB) arrangerade 1938 - 1947 årligen en teckningstävling för skolbarn. På ungdomssidan i tidningen skrevs att ”nu är det full fart på pennor och färglådor från Ystad till Haparanda och tid att sända in
klassens bidrag före den 15:e april”. Det fanns 5 000 kronor att vinna till skolresor och 150 skolklasser kunde vinna antingen 50 eller 25 kronor. Under åren fanns på tidningens framsida bilder på några barn som varit med i tävlingen
samt reportage om tävlingen.
Att tävlingar var vanliga och uppskattade moment i skolan fick FIB till sig genom insändare där man jfr med tävlingar som redan fanns inom idrott, sång m. m.
När Riksförbundet för bildande konst 1945 organiserade en vandrings-utställning med ett urval bilder från FIB:s teckningstävling, gjordes katalogen Sverige genom barnaögon. Initiativtagare till Riksförbundet för bildande konst, Sixten Strömbom,
som 1945 var intendent på Nationalmuseum, inledde katalogen med Barnteckningar på vandringsutställning. Strömbom menade att den nya fria teckningsundervisningen väcker barnens ”lust att i tävlan med kamraterna forma intryck… och utveckla
sitt känsloliv.” Han informerade då också om kommande visningar av en ”elitsamling av tävlingarnas prisbelönta teckningar”.
Teckningarna fick vara en del i Nationalmuseets konstsamling och 1941 anordnades en skolteckningsutställning på Nationalmuseum.
På 1940-talet ansåg man på Nationalmuseum att de vinnande barnteckningarnas kvaliteer gav anledning till att bevaras. De inskickade teckningar som inte utsågs till vinnare erbjöds respektive länsmuseum att ta över.
