I Växjö centrum, mellan affärsgatorna och järnvägen, fanns tidigare ett område som stod ut i bilden av det allt mer moderna Växjö som växte fram. Ett område fullt av små trähus, oregelbundna smågator och färgstarka människor. Området kallades Båtsmansbacken, efter att det ursprungligen byggts för Karl XI:s båtsmän. Området behöll sin karaktär och enkla standard medan Växjö moderniserades runt om, och i mitten av 1900-talet närmade sig grävskoporna också det pittoreska men slitna fattigområdet i centrums södra delar. Omkring 1960 revs området för att ge plats åt just det moderna växjö, projektet Båtsmanstorget, ritat av arkitekten Bent Jörgen Jörgensen. Växjö fick något nytt, men förlorade också något gammalt och kärt. Än idag finns minnen och berättelser om Båtsmansbacken kvar hos Växjöborna, både de som själva upplevt det och de som bara sett bilderna och hört berättelserna.
