Under åren 1868–1878 bodde stockholmskan Edla Ulrich på den då svenska ön Saint Barthélemy i Västindien. Under sina år där skrev och tecknade hon i en bok som finns bevarad i Sjöhistoriska museets arkiv. Den innehåller fantastiska teckningar av hus, landskap och flora på ön.
Edla Ulrich föddes 1816. Hon var lärarinna och blev i femtioårsåldern guvernant åt sina brorsdöttrar Anna, Ellen och Sigrid. Flickornas pappa, kommendörkapten Bror Ulrich, var guvernör över Sveriges då enda koloni. 1878 såldes ön till Frankrike och familjen återvände till Stockholm där de ofta verkar ha pratat och skrivit om sina minnen från ön.
