In 1897 SA Andrée set off on a journey to the Arctic, North Pole with the hydrogen balloon Eagle. Along with him on the trips was Knut Fraenkel and Nils Strindberg.
They departured from Svalbard in July 1897. After only two days the balloon lost hydrogen and stranded on the ice. The crew members had to start a long journey by foot, but they never reached an inhabited community. In October they sat camp on the White Island in Svalbard, which came to be their last stop. All three of the expedition members died during the expedition and their bodies were found again on White Island 1930. Where their frozen bodies were found they also found a tin containing Nils Strindberg's kamera and films from the trip.
In 1930 professor John Hertzberg manage to develope the film. In this set you will find some of the photos taken by Nils Strindberg and also some portraits of the crew before departure.
