Under en momentövning den 15/4 1943 försvann, och förlorades all kontakt med, ubåten Ulven under mystiska omständigheter. Till en början ansågs inte den uteblivna radiokontakten som något anmärkningsvärt. Men när nästa dag kom och fortfarande ingen kontakt kunde upprättas misstänkte man tillslut att något hänt med Ulven och hennes besättning. Därefter sattes ett stort sökningsarbete igång under ledning av kommendör K G Hamilton. Arbetet blev mycket pressat eftersom ju mer tid som gick desto mindre blev chansen att finna besättningen vid liv. Beräkningar gjordes där man kom fram till att besättningen i bästa fall skulle klara sig i som mest sex dagar under gynnsamma förhållanden ombord. Händelsen berörde hela Sverige och bara tanken på att vara fast i en ubåt med begränsat syre och vänta på hjälp påverkade såväl anhöriga som övrig befolkning.
Det skulle komma att ta nästintill tre veckor innan dykaren Ivar Eriksson, nedsänd från ubåtsbärgningsfartyget Belos, till sist kunde konstatera att han stod uppe på Ulven som låg på havets botten. Vid detta tillfälle var det sedan länge försent för besättningen. Det omständliga bärgningsarbetet kunde sedan inte slutföras förrän den 1 augusti, alltså nästan fyra månader efter det att Ulven sjunkit.
Väl på land startades en utredning där det fastställdes att Ulven gått på en mina omkring klockan 18:10 torsdagen den 15:e april och att hela besättningen på 33 man omkommit direkt. Fem man beräknades ha avlidit omedelbart av skador från själva explosionen. För resterande drogs slutsatsen att de bedövats av smällen och sedan drunknat i vattenmassorna kort därefter. För de anhöriga kom beskedet till viss del som en tröst då de äntligen fick svar kring vad som hänt deras familjemedlemmar och att döden inte varit plågsam och långdragen, vilket alla fruktat under sökningsarbetet.
