Gertrud Nillsson (1878- 1970) föddes i Uppsala och tjänstgjorde så småningom som lärare i Stockholm. Hon tillbringade somrarna i gränsfjällen mellan Jämtland och Härjedalen, där hon lärde sig konsten att binda rotkorgar av Stor-Stina i Bartjan, Jens Pålsson och andra samer och fjällbönder. I boken ”Min sjuhundrade korg” berättar hon om hur hon fångades av känslan för ”konsthantverkets rottrådar”. Gertrud förde på sitt sätt traditionen vidare och har blivit ett känt namn inom slöjdvärlden. I denna mapp har vi samlat de verktyg och den rotslöjd som en gång varit i Gertrud Nilssons händer och som idag ingår i Upplandsmuseets samlingar.
”Att behandla ett förstklassigt material, att själv dra upp det ur den svarta jorden och bearbeta det”. Det är Gertruds beskrivande ord om glädjen och hängivenheten till materialet och arbetet med detta.
