Vem var Anders Karlsson? En särling, en ensamstående, kringflackande, excentrisk suput? Ett original, en frihetstörstande, knäpp och gudabenådad begåvad konstnär?
Hur man än väljer att kategorisera Anders ”Knäpp” Karlsson så är det ofrånkomligt att hans bilder har en lockelse. De är underfundiga, roliga, överraskade och de kastar oss i händelser. Vi möter människor från förr på ett sätt som vi inte sett dem förut. De känns levande. De verkar ha roligt. Vi kan se fattigdomen och den tuffa vardagen, men Anders fotografier fångade också något annat – glädjen i det enkla med vänner, familj, barn och djur.
Anders Karlsson var det som brukar kallas en "gåramålare" men i fotografgestalt. Han avbildade hus, gårdar och djuren på gården, men också bemärkelsedagar, kalas, arbete och vardag. Han tog vissa beställningsuppdrag, många gånger betalades ersättningen ut som mat och husrum.
Anders Cornelius Karlsson föddes den 20 september 1893 på gården Håkebytorp i Tanums socken i Bohuslän. Han hade tre syskon. Efter faderns död 1917 flyttade familjen till Grebbestad och åren därefter tycks Anders Karlssons kringflackande liv tagit fart.
Någon gång mellan 1917 och 1920 köpte han sin första kamera i Hugo Svenssons fotoaffär i Göteborg. Den verkar ha följt med honom i de flesta situationer – alltid beredd att fotografera liv, händelser och människor i vardag och fest.
Omkring 1921 bosatte han sig i Skaraborg. Här fick han några av sina tillnamn – ”Sjuberga-Karlsson”, ”Håletängarn”, ”All världens Karlsson” och ”Knäpp”. Utifrån sina tillfälliga hem gjorde han fotoresor till Varaslätten, Dalsland, Falbygden och Vänerbygden. Under åren 1926-27 var han bosatt på Falbygden, 1928 i Alingsås och runt 1930 flyttade han först till Häljestena by i Tängs socken och sedan Blomberg på Kinnekulle. Här bytte han sin cykel mot en 98 kubiks lättviktsmotorcykel. 1937 bar flyttlasset vidare till Rudskoga i Värmland och sedan tillbaka till Västergötland till Götlunda socken i Tidan 1941 där han avled den 17 juni 1967.
Fotografier kan vara en fantastisk etnologisk källa. De berättar om frisyrer, dräkter, arbetskläder. De berättar om vardagsliv och arbete, om fest och glädjeämnen - ögonblick som oftast försvinner i historiens glömska. Kan sedan bilderna identifieras, knytas till personer, platser och händelser så blir deras betydelse ännu större.
