SJ började på 1950-talet på allvar att intressera sig för större diesellok. Efter att förstatligandet av de flesta privatjärnvägarna var genomfört i början av 1950-talet stod det klart att det under överskådlig tid skulle finnas kvar en hel del oelektrifierade linjer. De ånglok som SJ tog över var gamla och uttjänta. Samtidigt ville amerikanska General Motors (GM) in på den europeiska marknaden. För ändamålet byggdes detta dieselelektriska demonstrationslok.
Det var NOHAB (Nydqvist och Holm AB i Trollhättan) tillsammans med EMD (Electro Motive Divisions i Amerika) som 1954 lät visa upp ett demonstrationslok i Sverige och Europa. Loket hette G12 7707. 1956 köpet SJ loket sedan man bestämt sig för att licensbygga en serie dieselelektriska linjelok, benämnda T4 senare T41. Detta lok fick heta T5 105, och så småningom till T42 205. Loket från GM blev det enda med typbeteckningen T42. Loket kom att gå hela sin aktiva tid i godståg mellan Boden och Haparanda. Sikten, vid sidan om den långa motorhuven, var dålig men eftersom loket kunde köras i par med andra diesellok fick det ofta gå som andralok i tunga godståg. Loket ställdes av 1983 och såldes till den norska museiföreningen GM-gruppen, varifrån Järnvägsmuseet köpte tillbaka loket 2007.
Motorn är en tvåtakts V12:a från GM (General Motors), mod 567C. Loket är urmodern för alla de olika typer av GM-lok som NOHAB låt byggda åt Sverige, Norge, Danmark, Belgien, Luxemburg och Ungern, varav många fortfarande är i trafik. Efter allvarliga skador på två banmotorer i samband med ett trafikuppdrag fick loket repareras till driftdugligt skick. Loket är kördugligt och används i köruppdrag kring hela Sverige.
