Harald Linder föddes i Luleå 1 april 1880. Han var son till juvelerare Frans Linder, Luleå. Harald hade en bror, Bernhard Linder, som också var juvelerare. Brodern var verksam främst i Stockholm och Göteborg.
Harald Linder flyttade till Uddevalla år 1910. Han och hans hustru Frida hade två barn när familjen kom till Uddevalla. Paret kom att få sammanlagt fem barn.
I Uddevalla övertog Harald Linder C. L. Nordströms guldaffär som låg på Kungsgatan 96. Firman kallades "Carl L. Nordströms eftr. F. Linder". Troligen står F för Frida, Haralds hustru Frida Gustafva Linder, född Thunvall 1881.
År 1912 började han med egen stämpel i hustruns namn. 1926 ändrades stämpeln till H. Linder. Efter ett tag flyttade verksamheten till Kungsgatan 37, Uddevalla.
1917 flyttades affärsverksamheten till en lokal i norra hörnet Kungsgatan/Drottninggatan.
Butiken på Kungsgatan 37 drevs parallellt med den nya som en present och prydnadsbutik. Där såldes bland annat föremålen från Linders firma AB Svensk Metallkonst.
Ett flertal guldsmeder var anställda i Linders juvelerarverksamhet. År 1917 hade firman 25 anställda. Verkstaden var placerad i övervåningen i fastigheten på Kungsgatan/Drottninggatan.
Harald Linder lät uppföra ett hus på Kungsgatan bredvid butiken. Det gick i jugendstil, och där bosatte han sig med sin familj i de övre våningarna.
I bottenvåningen gjordes en affärslokal som hyrdes ut till "Stadens hattaffär". Högre upp i huset inrättades en ateljé, vilken "Berns Fotografi Atelier" hyrde.
I februari 1931 öppnade Linder en "konditorirestaurant" kallad "Skeppet" i den tidigare hattaffären. Genom en tidningsartikel i Kuriren kan man förstå att Linder lade ner mycket kraft på att ge restaurangen en genomtänkt inredning:
"Hela den konstnärliga inredningen har utförts av konstnärer och konsthantverkare från Uddevalla. Vi finna här tavlor, skulpturer, metallkonst och freskomålningar i mängd. Takfrisen i entrerummet har utförts av hr Fritz Triebel, som likaledes gjort dekoren å bordskivorna av tenn. I kabyssen se vi fresker med olika västkustmotiv av fru Lindeberg, fröken Märta Jansson, fröken Mertha Eriksson och fru Hammarfeldt. /.../ I "Kajutan" finnas fresker av fru Stina Forsell [Forssell], hr H. [Holger] Enequist samt fröken Märta Jansson. Taket av glas är dekorerat med hela djurkretsen, en originellt utförd sjöfararsymbolism. Golvet har lagts med herr Bjurströms nya golvbeläggning "dolomitmassa", här utfört i konstnärliga mönster. Väggpanelen är av konsttenn. /.../ Mästaren för alltihop är arkitekten, rektor Thelander."
I Bohusläningen vid samma tillfälle kan vi läsa att "Skeppet" förfogade över fyra rum. Ett kallades "Kina" och var möblerat med korgmöbler, och ett kallades "Kajutan" och hade skinnmöbler.
"En tennpanel i denna lokal av hr Linders egen tillverkning är något särdeles extra. Dess make är knappast stå att uppleta annan stans i Sveriges land."
Enligt Bohusläningen var även Edvin Ollers en av de konstnären som deltog i inredningsarbetet.
1947 år lades "Skeppet" ner, och lokalerna hyrdes ut till ett konditori kallat "Prinsess". Denna verksamhet drevs fram till1966 då byggnaden revs.
Ateljén i övervåningen kom Linder med tiden att använda som sin privata målarateljé.
Harald Linder grundade firman A-B Svensk Metallkonst omkring 1911-1912. De arbetade främst med koppar men även med mässing, järn och nysilver. Företaget höll till på Kilbäcksgatan och varorna såldes i butiken på Kungsgatan 37 i Uddevalla.
A-B Svensk Metallkonst har bland annat gjort koppararmaturerna till Lysekils kyrka, omkring 1915. De var så stora att de fick tillverkas utomhus på gården på Kilbäcksgatan. Troligen har Harald Linder ritat dem, han ritade det mesta själv. Denna firma lades troligtvis ner 1920.
Harald Linder hade två tennbutiker, en i Göteborg och en i Stockholm. De kallades "Tenn-Lådan" och de sålde bara tennföremål.
Allt som såldes i dessa butiker var av egen tillverkning. Omkring 40-50 personer arbetade i Uddevalla med att framställa tennföremålen.
I Stockholm startades butiken 1930 på Hamngatan 7-9. I Göteborg låg butiken först på Drottninggatan 37 åren 1928 -1930, och flyttade sedan till i Arkaden. Därefter låg den på Södra Hamngatan. I samband med den sista flytten bytte butiken namn till Linders (troligen 1934).
I den nya butiken utökades också sortimentet till att omfatta föremål även i guld och silver i egen produktion samt andra typer av konsthantverk, t.ex. textil, glas, keramik.
Även en mindre konsthall ingick i den nya verksamheten. Den kände målaren och formgivaren Edvin Ollers (1888-1959), ställde ut hos Linders i Göteborg 1934. Han ritade också några silverföremål för firman.
Harald Linder målade även själv tavlor och var mycket konstintresserad. Han var ordförande i Uddevalla konstförening, och var med och arrangerade konstutställningar i Uddevalla.
Han var också med i Sveriges juvelerare- och guldsmedsförbund, var vice ordförande 1930-1933 och ordförande 1933-1938. Han var även medlem i hantverksföreningen i Uddevalla.
Till Stockholmsutställningen 1930 gjorde Harald Linder en altarkanna, för kyrkligt bruk i tenn. Den ritades av Ivar Johnsson. Kalken uppmärksammades av den engelska konst- och formgivningstidskriften The Studio.
I samband med utställningen köpte kungafamiljen föremål av firman. Men redan 1918 hade firman utnämnts till H.M:t Konungens hovleverantör.
Firman tillverkade mycket på beställning, bland annat hederspresenter i tenn, vilket var mycket populärt under en period. 1926 skänkte församlingsmedlemmarna två nattvardskannor i silver till Uddevalla kyrka tillverkade av Linders.
De tillverkade också artiklar för Hallbergs och Guldsmedsaktiebolaget (GAB).
På 1930-talet hade Harald Linder patent för ett ventilation- och smutsskyddande lock kallat AJA-locket. Det var gjort i aluminium och användes främst till mjölkkannor.
Linder tog patent på många av sina produkter.
Harald Linder gjorde grindarna i järn till utställningsområdet vid hantverks och industriutställningen i Uddevalla 1928. Grindarna flyttades efter utställningens slut till Linders sommarhus på Strandvägen på Gustafsberg, Uddevalla.
Linders hade även ett sommarställe på Hamburgö, och det var på Hamburgö Harald Linder avled 1945.
Sonen Nils utbildades till guldsmed av sin far. Han var det enda av barnen som följde sin far i fotspåren. Nils föddes 1913 och tog över faders verksamhet på 1940-talet.
År 1948 gifte han sig med Ingegerd Andersson. De fick en dotter, Camilla, 1953. Nils slutade att arbeta på 1960-talet då han blev sjuk. Han avled 1983.
Hustrun Ingegerd började arbeta i butiken efter giftermålet, och arbetade där fram till att den lades ner 1992. I butiken såldes, förutom egen producerade föremål, även andra firmors produkter.
De sista åren hårdnade konkurrensen bland juvelerarna i Uddevalla. I slutet sålde firman mest guld- och silversmycken.
1965 flyttades affären till en ny lokal på Drottninggatan när den gamla fastigheten på Kungsgatan/Drottninggatan skulle rivas för att ge plats för varuhuset Domus.
Föremål stämplades i eget namn fram tills 1978.
När firman lades ner 1992 köpte Bockens tenn i Bollnäs Linders kokiller-formar som använts vid tenngjutning.
Familjen har två gravar på Norra kyrkogården i Uddevalla. Den ena har en kopparurna tillverkad vid firman.
