Ferdinand Södergren föddes 1811 i Norrköping. Föräldrarna bodde i S:t Olai församling och hade sedan tidigare dottern Augusta. 1831, när Södergren var en 20-årig soldat, var han troligen med om att bygga Göta kanal. Det sagda året avled fadern och Ferdinand Södergren, som var en skicklig målare, begav sig till Stockholm för att ytterligare förkovra sig. Södergren skrev in sig vid 'Akademien för de fria konsterna'.
Efter ett misslyckat försök till att prångla ut bancosedlar förfalskade av Södergren själv dömdes han den 3 juli 1840 till lagens strängaste straff. Dödsstraffet fick han dock med sin systers hjälp omvandlat till livsstids internering. Den 29 mars 1843, efter två år och åtta månader på Vaxholms fästning, benådades han av kungen. Samma år var Södergren tillbaka i Norrköping och etablerade sig som porträttmålare. Han arbetade även som slöjdlärare vid 'Carl Johans arbetsskola för gossar'.
Under hösten 1852 etablerade Södergren en fotografisk ateljé i staden. Efter endast ett par månaders verksamhet var olyckan framme och ateljén brann ner till grunden. Det kom efter det att dröja fem år innan Södergren återigen aviserade fotografisk verksamhet i Norrköping.
1892, när Ferdinad Södergren avled, övertogs ateljén av hans dotter Augusta (gift Kindahl).
