Emaus var från början ett av tre torp under Bodele, (Övre Bodele eller Hungerhult). Torpet finns med på Kempenskjölds karta från 1696. 1708 köpte rådman Pehr Schauw ängen på Hungerhult, 1738 ändrades namnet till Emaus och hänger samman med den pietistiska väckelserörelsen, som drog genom landet vid denna tid. Emaus är Uddevallas första omtalade landeri med tillkomst omkring 1740. Övergången från torp till landeri blev märkbar. Torpstugan ersattes med en herrgårdsliknande byggnad. Landerierna var gårdar som brukades och beboddes av borgare från staden. Henrik Bratt svärson till Pehr, ärvde Emaus, han blev ihjälslagen av en dräng på hemväg från Kyndelsmässo-marknaden 1763.
Sofia Almgren, änka efter rådman Christoffer Busck, arrenderade Emaus omkring 1810 till sin död 1826, sonen tog över till 1841, efter Buscks ägdes Emaus av J G Forsström fram till 1862, sedan bodde riksdagsmannen Fredrik Pettersson där, 1907 bytte Gustav Lönner till sig Emaus mot Hensbacka. Kommunen köpte Emaus 1965 av sterbhuset efter majoren Gustav Lönner för 495.000 kronor, sedan 1967 är det naturreservat.
