Kampenhofs bomullsspinneri och väveri byggdes åren 1856-57 vid Västerlånggatan. Byggnaden var ritad av arkitekt A. W. Edelswärd. Fabriken var avpassad för 80 vävstolar och 10.000 spindlar. Drivkraften utgjordes först av en 80 hkr. ångmaskin, från 1916 av elektricitet. Åren 1862-63 hade fabriken vissa svårigheter och fick tillämpa 4 dagars arbetsvecka. Från 1864 kördes åter fabriken för fullt. 1920 var 270 personer anställda, 1946 var det 330. Efter svårigheter på 1950-talet trädde bolaget i likvidation den 30 september 1954.
Kampenhofs bomullsspinneri grundades 1856 och fabriksbyggnaden började uppföras samma år. Initivativtagarna var major Mikael Koch, grosshandlare Nils Sirenius samt Robert W Bley d ä. Den sistnämnde blev företagets förste disponent. Kampenhofs maskinutrustning importerades från England och var ytterligt modern för sin tid. Tillverkningen var ganska mångsidig. Bl a tillverkades garn till fiskeredskap och segelduk. Under 1900-talet startade bolaget dotterföretaget Kamko. Arkitekten som ritade Kampenhof var löjtnant A W Edelswärd från Stockholm. Fabriksbyggnaden ansågs som en av Sveriges vackraste i sitt slag. Den bar tydliga influenser av nygotik, en av den industriella erans mest populära byggnadsstilar. Marken där Kampenhof uppfördes var sank och drabbades ofta av översvämningar. Omfattande pålnings- och grundförstärkningsarbeten måste genomföras innan fabriken kunde byggas. I Uddevalla ritade Edelswärd även det Thorburnska huset vid Kungstorget. Thorburnska huset finns kvar men Kampenhof revs 1982. Verksamheten vid fabriken upphörde dock redan 1954.
