U-a Tunnfabrik.
Konsul Fredrik Cöster och ingenjör David Thorburn var gemensamma ägare till den år 1868 startade snickerifabriken. 1889 utträdde David Thorburn ur denna firma och köpte av Cöster ängen nr 14 Skansgärdet och norra delen av ängen nr 15 Skanshagen, något mer än 3 tunnland. Priset var 5.000 kronor. På tomten lät Thorburn uppföra en fabriksbyggnad för tunntillverkning. Byggnaden var 100 fot lång och 56 fot bred. Maskinerna för tunntillverkningen överfördes från Cösters snickerifabrik till tunnfabriken. Tunnfabriken sysselsatte mellan 40 - 50 personer och var vid starten ensamma i landet att fabriksmässigt tillverka tunnor. Kraften till maskinerna erhölls från en ångpanna av säkerhetstyp, den ansågs ej kunna explodera. 250 tunnor om dagen kunde tillverkas vid fabriken. Minskad efterfrågan, ökad konkurrens, ägarbyten etc. gjorde att fabriken i mars 1935 blev försatt i konkurs. Efter en rekonstruktion 1937 blev den slutligen flyttad till Källviken 1957 där den dock snart upphörde.

Konsul Fredrik Cöster med firma Cöster & Co var en av förgrundsfigurerna i Uddevallas industriella liv på 1880-talet. Han hade anlagt en snickerifabrik med produktion av dörrar, fönster etc. som utvecklats till en stor anläggning. Vaken för tidens händelser och sannolikt inspirerad av en av sina meddelägare, ingenjör David Thorburn, fattade han på våren 1882 beslutet att starta en tunnbinderifabrik. Beslutet var grundat på erfarenheter från det stora sillfiskets behov och motiverat av den efterfrågan på tunnor som förelåg från saltare och andra interessenter. Tunnor, tillverkade av trästav, var det enda förekommande emballaget för transport på längre avstånd och framför allt ifråga om export. Bohusläningen omtalar i maj nyheten och uppger, att produktionen planerats till 1.000 tunnor per vecka.
För tillverkningen avsåg man att använda en patenterad amerikans uppfinning, men genom licensförfarande kunde man köpa maskinerna från London. Tunnstaven skulle utgöras av björk, som ansågs lämpligast för ändamålet. Detta mekaniska tunnbinderi är sannolikt det första i Sverige, skriver Bohusläningen. I slutet av 1882 var tunnfabriken igång, och den 30 augusti tillverkades den första fabriksmässigt gjorda silltunnan i Uddevalla.
Delägare i Cöster & Co var som tidigare nämnts ingenjör David Thorburn. Han utträdde under decenniet ur firman och enligt den uppgörelse som då träffades tog han med sig tunnbinderidelen samt uppförde en ny fabrik vid Skansbergets östra fot. Maskinerna från det äldre företaget förde han med sig men anskaffade också en del nyheter och utnyttjade framför allt tekniska landvinnigar på området.
