Finis Kasens tegelbruk!
Så löd en av Bohusläningens förstasidesrubriker fredagen juni 1936. Dagen förut hade den 30 meter höga skorstenen sprängts - det var en publiksensation. Därmed försvann en av Uddevallas äldsta industrier, uppförd av den Thorburnska släkten.
Tegelbrukets saga rann upp i början av 1800-talet, då den unge skotten William Thorburn från Leith vid en resa genom Bohuslän så fångades av Byfjordenssceneriernas skönhet och Kasens gård, som låg där i lummig grönska, att han på stående fot bjöd en tunna guld för gården, när han fick höra att den var till salu. På den tiden motsvarade det en summa av 16.666:67 rdr specie. Sedan for han vidare och fick ett år senare meddelande att anbudet antagits.
1822 landade William Thorburn med maka vid Kasen - de kom med en stor skonare.
I över 100 år hörde sedan Kasen till den Thorburnska släkten och intog under den romantiska perioden i mitten av 1800-talet en dominerande plats inom sällskapslivet såväl i Uddevalla som sommartid för de förnäma badgästerna på Gustafsberg. Dessa gjorde varje sommar en utflykt dit ett par gånger i lövade vagnar och såväl Tegnér som Böttiger har båda skrivit i herrgårdens minnesbok. Känd är Esaias Tegnérs dikt: "Sommarens grönskar över Kasens lundar", Böttiger sjöng om Kasens sekelgamla lindar.
William Thorburn satte bl.a. igång med den stora havreexporten från Uddevalla, varom havremagasinen på Badö och Kasenabben länge bar vittne. 1859 förflyttade han till Nabben det tegelbruk, som då var förlagt till Sörvik, och vilket sedan var igång till in på 1930-talet. Råvaran transporterades fram med en 2 km lång rälsbana från lergroparna på sluttningarna uppåt Herrestadfjället. Banan var så anordnad att de nedgående lastade vagnarna drog upp de tomma. Produktionen av tegelrör och tegelpannor skickades vidare med en segelbåt Tärnan, som kryssade mellan Nabben och hamnen och hade med sig tillbaka kol för ugnarna.
När det formade teglet torkats, brändes det inne i ugnarna. I den behagliga värmen här brukade vägarnas riddare gärna hålla till och tegelbruket var ett känt luffarlogis.
Kring 1930-talet övertogs rörelsen och Kasens gård av greve Eric G:son Lewenhaupt, samtidigt som den förnämliga djurbesättningen på Kasen såldes och driften vid tegelbruket stoppades. De övriga tegelbruken i trakten hade för att slippa konkurrens arrenderat rörelsen på sju år. Magasinen och byggnaderna på Nabben var gamla och kunde ej stå rycken utan underhållskostnader: rivningen började. För den höga skorstenen behövdes kraftiga dynamitladdningar, då den var byggd på den gamla hederliga tiden med nästan metertjocka väggar intill rökgången.
Därmed försvann en Uddevallaindustri, som under de goda tiderna haft upp till 35 man i arbete. K
