En bevarad handling visar i profil de tre slussar, Elvius, Polhem och Ekeblads slussar, vilka ingick i Polhems slussled från 1749.
Innovatum i Trollhättan beskriver platsen på 2000-talet:
Den här utsprängda hålan är Elvius sluss, den nedersta i Pohems slussled från 1749. Man kan skönja en tunnel i berget, den sprängdes ut för att portarna skulle motstå trycket från det stora djupet. Tunneln kallas stollgång.
En damm byggdes i strömmen för att båtar skulle kunna ta sig fram till slussen i lugnt vatten. Men den starka strömmen försvårade arbetet och 1755 skedde en olycka där nio män omkom. Plankor som släpptes i strömmen orsakade ett ras i den nästan färdiga dammen. Polhems kanal- och slussprojekt lades då ner i brist på vidare finansiering. Pehr Elvius var sekreterare i Kungliga Vetenskapsakademien. Han hjälpte Polhem med mätningar vid slussleden.

Hugo Hallgren började fotografera 1897 enligt uppgifter i hans eget register.
”När kamreren Hugo Hallgrens år 1933 gick bort, förvärvade Fornminnessällskapet Vikarvet hans stora samlingar av fotografier, handlingar, tidningsurklipp och tryck.
1954 beslöt emellertid Vikarvet att deponera samlingen i stadsarkivet (Lysekil). Samlingarna äro delvis ordnade av kamrer Hallgren själv.
Samlingen innehåller en del helt unika foton från köpingens blomstringstid. Bildsamlingen i övrigt representeras av vidare av omkring 3000 negativ, mest glasplåtar. En serie på 2092 nummer har av kamrer Hallgren själv ordnats och försetts med ganska utförliga uppgifter om motivet och tiden för fotot. Det gäller plåtar från tiden 1897 till 1919. Kamrer Hallgren påbörjade även ett register över denna samling, vilken omfattar något över 500 nummer. Motiven äro hämtade från Lysekil och trakten häromkring med stark tonvikt på Havsbadet och Gullmarn. Segling och sjöfart äro de dominerande motiven på de talrika journalbetonade bilderna i samlingen. Denna innehåller också en del bilder av mera privat natur.”

Motivkretsen är huvudsakligen badanstalten och dess utbyggnad, badortsliv, byggandet av bron till Släggö, kappseglingar, örlogsfartyg, Rosvik, byggandet av Lysekils nya kyrka. Varje höst efter badsäsongens slut brukade Hallgren göra resor i Sverige, gärna till andra badorter och städer där han fotograferade flitigt.
Hugo Hallgren var son till kamrer Niclas Hallgren som byggde huset i Rosvik 1873. Brodern Erik blev bankkamrer. Hugo Hallgren byggde 1912 ett eget hus vid tennisbanan.

Vikarvet startade år 1915 som Fornminnessällskapet Vikarfvet. Inriktningen var då vård av fornminnen i Bohuslän.
En museibyggnad tillkom 1972. Föreningen fick då en mer allmän kulturhistorisk inriktning.
Namnet ändrades år 2009 till Bohuslänska Kulturhistoriska Sällskapet Vikarvet och från 2013 heter föreningen Vikarvet.
