1860 startade Edward Olsson en liten tändsticksfabrik på norr i Uddevalla. Den drevs med viss framgång i ett tiotal år. En tändsticksindustri i betydligt större skala blev redan från början den fabrik, som Adolf P Zachau startade 1874. Herrnhutarnas gamla gudstjänstlokal, som varit sjukhus i ett tjugotal år, var ledig och här vid Kungsgatan fick till en början 54 personer arbete. Arbetarantalet skulle komma att växa till över 800. Sedan säkerhetständstickan gjort Sverige till ett föregångsland, växte exporten och uddevallafabriken med den. Snart var hela kvarteret mellan Kungs- och Kilbäcksgatorna fullbyggt. Virkeslager och byggnader för de färdig produkterna uppfördes inom området för nuvarande Östraboskolan. Kontoret fanns i det hus, som 1986 disponeras av Studio 32. Utbyggnaden fortsatte långt in på 1900-talet med bl a en stor modern fabriksbyggnad på den tomt där Tigerfabriken nu ligger. Denna del kallades vanligen "Kompletten" eftersom rationaliseringen här drivits mycket längre, än i den gamla fabriksdelen. Transporter inom området skedde med rälsbundna vagnar, men från och till hamnen körde under 1900-talets första årtionden två stora kedjedrivna lastbilar, vilkas järnhjul dundrade mot gatstenarna. Oljudet dämpades obetydligt genom påsatta gummiplattor. I hamnen lastades tändstickslårar till Burma, Indonesien m fl exotiska länder och här hämtades också det ryska aspvirket, som vid denna tid krävdes för själva stickorna. Krügerkraschen på 30-talet satte stopp för vidare tillverkning och fabriken lades ned 1938.

Fotograf Thure Nihlén var född i Landskrona den 11 december 1877. Efter läroverksstudier började han sin fotografutbildning, som även innefattade yrkespraktik i Tyskland och England.
1906, vid 29 års ålder köpte han sin ateljé i Uddevalla på Södra Drottninggatan 13. Säljare var fotograf A. Hansson, som nu flyttade till Göteborg.
Thure Nihlén verkade som fotograf i Uddevalla i hela 43 år, fram till 1949 då han av åldersskäl slutade. Otaliga är de bilder som Nihlén tagit och vad det gäller gatu- och miljöbilder från Uddevalla.
Även socknarna runt om Uddevalla fick besök av Nihlén vid skolavslutningar, konfirmationer och liknande händelser. Hans transportmedel vid dessa färder var en stor, brungul motorcykel med sidvagn av märket Harley Davidson.
Thure Nihlén avled den 4 juni 1958 och är begravd på Ramneröds kyrkogård i Uddevalla.
Gösta Biselius skänkte glasplåtar och kameror m.m. till Uddevalla museum 1968. Därefter har ytterligare en handfull fotografier inkommit från olika givare.
