Fullriggaren HMS NAJADEN byggdes i Karlskrona 1897 som övningsfartyg för flottan. Fartyget användes för utbildning av skeppsgossar varje sommar fram till 1938. Besättningen bestod av 20 befäl och 100 skeppsgossar i åldrarna 15-17 år. Seglatserna gick från hemorten Karlskrona längs väst- och ostkusten och de danska öarna, men också längre resor till England, Skottland, Holland, Tyskland och Baltikum.
Fartyget kom 1946 till Halmstad och är renoverad av Föreningen Najadens Vänner och används som museum. Najaden är idag en av världens minsta fullriggare.
Skeppsgossekåren var en organisation inom svenska flottan 1685-1939 för utbildning till sjöman på marinens fartyg. Från 1899 var antagningsåldern 15 år, fram till 1848 var antagningsåldern så låg som 8 år. Grundutbildningen var 3 år. Som 18-åring skulle man ”karlskrivas”, lämnade skeppsgossekåren för att bli matros på flottans fartyg, kontraktsbunden på sex år. Vanligtvis blev söner till örlogssjömän skeppsgossar. Verksamheten hade en delvis filantropisk inriktning då man också utbildade fattiga och föräldralösa barn.
Minnen från åren som skeppsgosse handlar ofta om en hård fostran med disciplin, aga och även pennalism. Många pojkar rymde från kåren. Vintertid ägnades åt studier och gymnastik och man bodde i kaserner. På Marstrand bodde skeppsgossarna vintertid på Carlstens fästning. På sommaren bodde man ombord på logementsfartyget, korvetten NORRKÖPING, byggd på Karlskronavarvet år 1848, under 1930-talet ersatt av utrangerade pansarskeppet HMS NIORD. Sommaren tillbringade skeppsgossarna ombord för utbildning på fartyg till sjöss.
”På örlogsskeppen har man, åtminstone sedan 1650-talet men förmodligen ännu tidigare, haft små pojkar som fick utföra vissa sysslor. Av erfarenhet visste man att skeppsgossarna oftast blev duktiga sjömän och detta ville man ta vara på när det första reglementet kom 1685. Krigsarkivets äldsta rulla över skeppsgossar daterar sig från 1677.
Skeppsgossekåren som fanns i Karlskrona delades 1828 upp i två skeppsgossekompanier; 1:a och 2:a kompanierna. 1902 tillkom 3:e kompaniet. 1907 startade även en kår i Marstrand med två kompanier, vilka kallades 4:e och 5:e kompanierna. De två sistnämnda skulle lyda under Stockholms örlogsstation och pojkarna skulle rekryteras till sjömanskåren i Stockholm.” http://www.riksarkivet.se/default.aspx?id=9055
Skeppsgossekåren på Marstrand upphörde 1937 och som institution i Sverige 1939.
