Lydia Sjöström 1851–1917
Resandefotograf, sömmerska, Amerikaresenär och caféägare.
Lydia kommer till världen som femte barnet i en av Härnösands rikaste familjer. Fadern gör sig goda inkomster på skogsaffärer och sjöfrakter men går i konkurs med stora skulder. När båda föräldrarna dör väljer Lydia fotografyrket. I Stockholm är hon elev hos Alfred Dahllöf. Efter en tid som fotografbiträde med långa dagar och låg lön beslutar hon sig för att bli fotograf och bygger sig en tillfällig ateljé på övningsfältet Sånga Mo i Ångermanland och börjar fotografera beväringar vid övningsfälten.
Lydia får som många andra ständigt bryta upp för att hitta nya möjligheter för att försörja sig. Hon reser runt och fotograferar vyer över kända och populära platser. Bilderna sammanställs i ett album som säljs via bokhandlare eller från den egna ateljén.
Konkurrensen är stor mellan flera etablerade fotografer i Sundsvall så sommaren och hösten 1888 tillbringar Lydia i Norrbotten och säljer album med vyer från Gellivare och från gruvorna i Malmberget. Malmberget är en riktig kåkstad med ett hundratal hus och lönnkrogar. Vid sidan av fotograferandet tar Lydia emot beställningar på kläd- och linnesömnad då hon behöver få in extra pengar. 1889 reser hon ensam från Göteborg till New York till sin bror och startar en caférörelse i Boston. De sista fem åren i sitt liv är hon tillbaka i Sverige.
