Köping-Uttersbergs Järnväg, KUJ, kom till för att effektivisera
transporterna från de många bruken i Hedströmsdalen och på
angränsande orter till Köpings hamn - samma transporter som järnvägen
användes till i ett drygt sekel fram till nedläggningen. Genom detta
bygge kom trakten att också i jämförelse med det övriga landet få
järnväg jämförelsevis tidigt, bara tio år efter att de första
personförande banorna med lokdragna tåg öppnats. När järnvägen
invigdes 1866 hade diskussionerna om den också pågått i mer än tio år
och åtskilliga gånger komplicerats av uteblivna statslån och hänsyn
till andra planerade järnvägar. De ursprungliga planerna gällde en
normalspårig bana, men som det är bekant kom järnvägen sedermera att
byggas med den udda spårvidden 1093 mm.
