Under 1800-talets omfattande koleraepidemier bars som skydd mot sjukdomen amuletter av koppar i form av runda eller ellipsformade plåtar, ibland upp till 10 cm i diameter. Föreställningen om att just koppar skulle skydda mot smitta hängde samman med att Falun och omgivningarna kring koppargruvan sades ha klarat sig lindringare undan tidigare pestepidemier, då smittbärande råttor skytt svavellukten i trakten. Staden och koppargruvan fick därmed rykte om sig att vara en säker plats i farsotstider. Se vidare Tillhagen, C.H. Folklig läkekonst, Stockholm 1962, s. 146f.
