Swe´denborg (före 1719 Swedberg), Emanuel, född 29 januari 1688 i Stockholm, död 29 mars 1772 i London, naturvetenskapsman, bibeltolkare och teosof. På både fädernet och mödernet härstammade Swedenborg från bergsmän, men fadern Jesper Swedberg hade valt den lärda banan och slutade som biskop. Swedenborgs märkliga karriär, som gjort honom till en av de mest kända svenska författarna världen över, bestämdes av detta dubbla arv.

Efter avslutade studier vid Uppsala universitet inriktade sig Swedenborg mot naturvetenskap och teknik. Under en femårig Europaresa fick han möta ledande naturforskare och förkovra sig i mekaniska konster. I brev hem redovisade han ivrigt mer eller mindre fantastiska uppfinningar, av vilka ritningen till en flygmaskin var den mest spektakulära. Ett fåtal av sina uppslag lyckades han realisera efter hemkomsten 1715. Viktigast var utgivningen av den första svenska vetenskapliga tidskriften, Daedalus Hyperboreus (1716–18). Som namnet antyder ('den nordlige uppfinnaren') fyllde han den huvudsakligen med redogörelser för Christopher Polhems uppfinningar. Genom kungligt beslut utnämndes Swedenborg till assessor i Bergskollegiet med uppdrag att assistera Polhem. Efter Karl XII:s död blev hans ställning osäker under några år, men till slut godtogs han som ordinarie assessor. I den egenskapen fick han kollegiets uppdrag att genomföra den första teknikutvärderingen i landet (av en ångmaskin), vilket han gjorde med framgång.
Under nästan ett decennium krävde tjänsten det mesta av hans tid. Från 1733 fram till avskedet på egen begäran 1747 var han dock tjänstledig under långa perioder för vetenskapligt arbete. Det första publicerade resultatet blev Opera philosophica et mineralia (1734). Av de tre foliovolymerna behandlar två järn- och kopparframställning, medan Swedenborg i den tredje sammanfattade sina teorier om den oorganiska naturens uppkomst och utveckling fram till bildandet av vårt solsystem. Denna omfångsrika avhandling i teoretisk fysik grundar sig väsentligen på Descartes naturfilosofi men vittnar framför allt om bred beläsenhet och spekulativ kreativitet inom ett område som fängslat honom sedan ungdomen.
Under arbetet med denna volym hade Swedenborg sökt vidga sina filosofiska horisonter, bl.a. genom att läsa Leibnizlärjungen Christian Wolffs nyutkomna verk. Det inspirerade honom till att formulera ett svindlande program för sin fortsatta forskning, nämligen att på empirisk väg finna bevis för själens odödlighet. För att genomföra detta inledde han anatomiska och fysiologiska studier av människan, vilkas resultat redovisades i tvåbandsverket Oeconomia regni animalis (1740–41). Swedenborg fann sig dock ha haft alltför bråttom att här nå upp till själens nivå, och snart gjorde han upp planer till ett nytt verk, kallat Regnum animale, som skulle omfatta inte mindre än sjutton delar. Men sedan han utgivit tre volymer (1744–45) under ännu en utlandsresa tog hans otålighet sig nya uttryck. I ett ofullbordat verk om världens och människans skapelse, De cultu et amore Dei (1745), sökte han gestalta sin syntetiska vision i litterär form, och i enskildheter nådde Swedenborg här högst i poetisk skaparkraft.

Skapelsedramat hade tillkommit under intryck av den djupgående religiösa kris 1743–44 som återges i den postumt utgivna Drömboken (1859). Krisen klingade ut i en gudomlig uppenbarelse på våren 1745, genom vilken Swedenborg fann sig kallad att uttolka Bibelns andliga innebörd. Därmed befriades han från sitt omöjliga forskningsprojekt men ålades i stället uppgiften att återge mänskligheten den sanna kristentro som hade gått förlorad sedan urkyrkans dagar. Han påbörjade nu exegetiska studier med samma frenesi som han samlat naturvetenskapliga data, men med andar och änglar som handledare. Det är framför allt hans anspråk på att ha tillträde till hinsidestillvaron som markerar den avgörande skiljelinjen i Swedenborgs författarskap. Berättelser om vad han sett och hört i andevärlden finns infogade mellan de textutläggande kapitlen i Arcana coelestia (1–8, 1749–56), och även i de många följande skrifterna fram till krönet Vera christiana religio (1771) upptar scener där han samtalar med andar och änglar betydande utrymme. Den teoretiska inramningen förblev dock i sina huvuddelar oförändrad, och även som teosof vände sig Swedenborg med utpräglat rationella argument till en latinläsande publik.
Swedenborgs förkunnelse om tillvaron efter döden som en andlig motsvarighet till jordelivet, vilken grundar sig på hans korrespondenslära, har attraherat många läsare inom och utom de swedenborgianska samfund som leder sitt ursprung till 1780-talets England (se Nya Kyrkan). Han har utövat ett betydande inflytande på flera stora diktare: Blake, Balzac, Baudelaire, Emerson, Yeats, Borges, Milosz, i Sverige Almqvist, Strindberg, Ekelöf och Gyllensten. Genom de brittiska och amerikanska nykyrkliga samfundens försorg har de flesta av hans efterlämnade manuskript utgivits och hans religiösa skrifter översatts till en stor mängd språk i alla världsdelar.
År 2005 upptogs Swedenborgs arkiv i Vetenskapsakademien på UNESCO:s lista över världsminnen.
