Avskrift ur brev från givaren I: "[...] När något spädbarn hade engelska sjukan skulle man sticka dihornet genom denna ögla och låta barnet äta tre gånger genom den."
Avskrift ur brev från givaren II: "'Självvuxen trä' - magiskt medel mot engelska sjukan. Min far var som en slags läkare. Han ådrade, blåste i vatten, botade kräk o.s.v. Han hade också två stycken 'självvuxen trä' som användes vid botande av 'riset' (engelska sjukan). Det en var en kvist av hägg, som var vuxen som en knut, som inte var riktigt tilldragen. Jag minns så väl när pappa hade varit och huggit den där. Jag minns också när den användes hos grannar, som hade ett barn sjukt i 'rise'. Pappa gick dit med den, och så satte dom tut'n (dihornet) genom den där öglan, och så skulle barnet äta genom den. Det skulle ske tre gånger, men jag minns inte att det skulle vara några särskilda dagar. Men nog minns jag att dom tyckte, att det där hade gjort verkan. Det andra självvuxen träet var en kvist av ene, som hade vuxit ihop som en ring. Det användes på samma sätt som det andra. Till ett av folkmedicinens mest utbredda botredskap hörde häftträn, stämträn, valbundna eller vårdbundna trän. Dessa utgjordes av en trädgren, mindre grenklyka eller en trädknut som av naturen eller människan formats så att en ring, eller ett genomgående hål bildats. Principen var att den sjuke själv, den sjukes linne, eller vätska för den sjuke att ta in, skulle dras genom hålet enligt särskild ordning. Sådan så kallad smöjning är en mycket gammal botetradition som i Sverige ännu in på 1900-talet användes för att behandla en rad sjukdomar, framför allt rakitis bland barn.
