Daguerrotypi är det äldsta praktiskt användbara fotografiska förfarande som efterlämnat ett varaktigt resultat. Metoden utvecklades på 1830-talet av Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre och Nicéphore Niepce. Efter Niepces död 1833 fortsatte Daguerre ensam att utveckla metoden. År 1839 offentliggjordes uppfinningen i den franska vetenskapsakademin och samma år skänkte franska staten den som gåva till mänskligheten genom att med livränta friköpa patentet från upphovsmännen.
Metoden består i att en silverpläterad kopparplåt utsätts för jodångor som bildar ett ljuskänsligt skikt av silverjodid. Efter exponering i kameran framkallas plåten i kvicksilverångor och en positiv men spegelvänd bild uppstår. Fixeringen skedde ursprungligen i en koksaltlösning som senare kom att ersättas av en natriumtiosulfatlösning. Dagerrotypen är unik och kan endast mångfaldigas genom omfotografering. Den har karaktär av en spegel och måste vinklas mot en mörk bakgrund för att bäst kunna uppfattas. Dagerrotyper förekommer ofta i små etuier där bilden ligger väl emballerad och skyddad bakom en glasskiva.
I Sverige gav Albert Bonnier redan 1839 ut en bruksanvisning i bokform, "Daguerrotypen, teoretiskt och praktiskt beskriven". Han importerade även själva utrustningen för framställandet av dagerrotyper. Bilderna utfördes vid 1840-talets mitt även med handkolorering. Dagerrotypen hade mycket stor betydelse som bildmedium från 1839 fram till 1850-talets mitt.
