Enligt sägen skall ringen vara Sten Sture d. y:s och Kristina Gyllenstiernas trolovningsring. Paret gifte sig 1511. Stilistiskt sett hör dock ringen till senare delen av 1500-talet.

Stureringen är utförd i guld samt flerfärgad emalj och ytterligare utsmyckad med taffelslipade stenar. Taffelslipning innebär att ädelstenarna slipas till en rektangulär form med en plan översida. Sidorna slipas sedan till utåtställda fasetter. Stenarna, almandin, en viss typ av röd granat som består av järn och aluminium, bergkristall, safir och smaragd är sammanhållna till en rektangel. Bergkristallen tros i det här fallet vara en ersättning för en diamant. Rektangeln av stenar bärs upp av två händer som håller var sitt hjärta. Stureringens stenar har alla sin egen symbolik. Almandinen sades kunna göra bäraren både osynlig och ge förmågan att alltid vara vid gott humör. Diamanten, som i ringen är ersatt av en bergkristall, gav styrka i strid samt skyddade mot trolldom och spöken. Safiren symboliserade sanning och trohet mot sin älskade men skyddade också mot så vitt skilda företeelser som fattigdom, förräderi, ögonsjukdomar och ormbett. Smaragden i sin tur troddes skänka rikedom och ära. Ringen är delbar, inuti vilar ett litet guldskelett. Det är troligt att det på motsatt sida om skelettet tidigare funnits en miniatyrskulptur föreställande en vuxen människa eller ett litet barn. Tillsammans symboliserade figurerna livet och döden.
Förutom inskriptionen ”QUOS DEUS CON JUNXIT HOMO NON SEPARET” vilket betyder ”den Gud förenat skall människan ej åtskilja” går det inuti Stureringen att läsa ”TROLOVNINGSRING:F:CHRIST:G:S:” samt ” S:R:FÖRESTÅNDARE:UNGA:S:STURES.” Den sistnämnda inskriptionen har sannolikt tillkommit vid 1700-talets början och indikerar vad man enligt traditionen ansett om ringens ursprung. Ringens utförande talar dock emot att den skulle vara makarna Stures förlovningsring från 1511. Inte förrän omkring år 1550 börjar jämförbara ringar dyka upp i stilhistorien. Troligtvis har ringen istället tillhört en yngre generation av Stureätten.

De dateringar, tillverkaruppgifter och material som avviker från uppgifterna i huvudliggaren eller katalogkorten kan komma från dessa expertutlåtanden.
