Tapeten är tillverkad av den amerikanska tapetfirman M. H. Birge & Sons Co. Firman grundades av Martin H. Birge (1806-1900) i Buffalo, USA. Namnet H. M. Birge & Sons kom först på 1870-talet, Då hade man helt gått över till att sälja tapeter, efter att ha sålt även andra produkter tidigare. Firman blev en av de största producenterna av tapeter i USA och hade även kontor i Europa. Ett tag var man en del av National Wall Paper Co (1890-tal) men 1900 var man åter egna. Firman lades ned 1982. Dess emblem var en Buffel, trol. syftande på staden Buffalo i staten New York, där företaget hade sin bas.

Enligt artikel i The Buffalo Evening News 5 feb. 1947 grundades firman 1834. Till att börja med såldes mest exklusiva tapeter, men så småningom såldes även billigare tapeter.
Tapeten har också gjorts med röd botten, vilken finns i Victoria & Alberts samlingar i London (museum number E.431-1914).
Tapeten är av papper, men av den typ som försöker efterlikna gyllenläderstapeter. Tapeter imiterande gyllenlädertapeter blir vanliga under 1800-talet senare del och i början av 1900-talet.
Enligt fil.dr Elisabeth Hidemark har vi inte haft någon större import av amerikanske tapeter vid tiden för denna tapets tillverkning. Jmfr inv.nr 307.661.
Tapeten sattes upp I Stockholms Stads Brandförsäkringskontors (Brandkontoret) styrelserum 1913, då detta rum iordningställdes. Vid den senaste omdaningen i rummet hängdes draperier upp framför tapeten, som alltså sitter kvar, men ej är synlig. Brandkontoret grundades 1746 och är ett försäkringsbolag för fastigheter i Stockholm. Beläget vid Mynttorget i Gamla Stan. Den nu förvärvade tapetrullen hittades på vinden på brandkontoret nyligen och skänktes till Nordiska museet.
