- History
Nils Peter Hamberg (1815 – 1902), född och huvudsakligen bosatt i Stockholm. Verksam som kemist, apotekare, medicine doktor, professor mm. 1853 inrättade Hamberg ett museum i Stockholm för sina samlingar av naturvetenskap, slöjd och konst. Museet upphörde 1864 då samlingarna såldes eller skänktes.
Hambergska samlingarna på Bohusläns museum innehåller 24 föremål som kan hänföras till den gåva som Uddevalla Museum erhöll 1870 av Nils Peter Hamberg. Ursprungligen kan samlingen ha bestått av ytterligare föremål. Förvärvet beskrivs som "fyra lådor med diverse saker", men gåvoförteckning saknas: UM000022 - UM000025, UM000034 - UM000036, UM00206, UM00240, UM00241, UM00602, UM00642, UM000723, UM000754., UM000755, UM000758
Knut Adrian Andersson skriver i sin katalog, I:141–143 från 1916 följande om de s k Hambergska samlingarna:
"De Hambergska Samlingarna
Enligt protokoll av Uddevalla musei styrelses sammanträde 27 Juni 1870.
§ 2.
Ordförande (Rektor Johan Rodhe) tillkännagav, att från Doctorn och Riddaren N. P. Hamberg i Stockholm hade ankommit 4 lådor diverse saker till museum i Uddevalla jämte ett så lydande gåvobrev (detta har ej vid inventering 1915 av Intendenten K. A. Andersson kunnat återfinnas): "Till styrelsen över Uddevalla Museum.
Härmed anhåller jag att till Uddevalla Museum få förära åtskilliga natur- och slöjdalster från olika delar av Sverige ävensom en liten samling från St. Barthélèmy (liten ö bland små Antillerna S. Amerika f.d. svensk koloni skänkt av Karl XIV Johan såld till Frankrike år), utgörande med högst få undantag den svenska avdelningen av det museum för naturvetenskap, slöjd och konst, som i Stockholm för några år sedan inrättades, men som av brist på underhållsmedel icke kunde fortsätta. - Min innerligaste önskan är, att de som i dag till herrar Seeligs Comp: för vidare befordran (till Uddevalla Museum) överlämnade samlingarna måtte bevaras, uppställas och tillökas, så att de kunna åskådliggöra fäderneslandets naturprodukter samt den slöjd och konst som är utmärkande för befolkningen i olika landskap. - Jag anser obehövligt att här framhålla gagnet och betydelsen av en fullständig dylik samling, men finner mig manad att härmed uttrycka min förbindliga tacksägelse till Styrelsen (för Uddevalla Museum) för dess beredvillighet att vidmakthålla, vårda och säkerligen tillöka i fråga varande samlingar." Efter uppläsandet härav beslutades att Ordföranden nu genast såsom den, som förut korresponderat med Doctor Hamberg, skulle tillskriva honom underrättande om sakernas framkomst, varefter särskilt tacksägelsebrev skulle tillsändas honom, undertecknat av samtliga styrelseledamöterna, så snart sakerna blivit uppackade.
§3.
Då plats för i ovanstående paragraf nämnda gåva saknades i övre våningen av museum, beslöts att inreda rummen åt gården på nedre botten och där på enkla hyllor kring väggarna uppställa Hambergska samlingen. Luckor till fönstren skulle anskaffas. De omflyttades sedermera.
De olika föremålen voro troligen alla försedda med var sin etikett, å vilken endast stod tryckt "Hambergska samlingarne." (några föremål buro ännu vid inventering efter museets renovering 1913–14 dylika etiketter hösten 1915; men under årens lopp hade de flesta förlorat sina etiketter, vilka ej blivit ersatta av nya.) Någon katalog över Dr Hambergs samling kunde ej i museet 1915 träffas. Intet nämnes heller därom i protokollsboken.
De svenska föremål som kunnat identifieras tillhörande dessa samlingar, äro naturligtvis införda på behöriga platser i denna katalog; de utländska föremålen åter äro upptecknade i den Etnografiska katalogen.
Enär Uddevalla museum enligt min åsikt ej bör vara ett kuriositetsmuseum såsom förut (dylika museers tid är redan förbi) och ej heller bör omfatta föremål (för) från hela vårt kära fosterland utan bör övergå till att bliva ett rikhaltigt Hembygdsmuseum (för Bohuslän och dess huvudort Uddevalla), kommer troligen icke Doktor N. P. Hambergs lovvärda förhoppningar att här i Uddevalla till fullo uppfyllas. Skansen i Stockholm är nu lämpligaste platsen för samlingar, omfattande hela vårt lands kulturella utveckling.

1. Hamberg, Nils Peter, kemist. Född i
Stockholm d. 4 nov. 1815. Föräldrar:
sjökaptenen Nicolaus
Hamberg och Magdalena Lovisa Löfvenberg.
H. började sin bana som farmaceut, aflade
apotekareexamen i Stockholm
1838 och erhöll 1839 privilegium
på det af honom s. å. inköpta
apoteket Hjorten i hufvudstaden. Kort
därefter beslöt han sig för att taga den medicinska
graden och erhöll medicine doktorsdiplom
1849. Sedan han vid karolinska och det i förbindelse
med detsamma stående farmaceutiska
institutet innehaft åtskilliga lärareförordnanden,
utnämndes han vid det senare 1861 till ordinarie
lärare i kemi, och 1868 blef han tillika lektor
vid veterinärinstitutet i Stockholm; 1872 af
sundhetskollegium förordnad till rättskemist, blef
H. 1875 ord. innehafvare af ämbetet, erhöll professorstitel
och invaldes 1878 i Vet.-akad. Han
afgick 1883 från rättskemistbefattningen och afled
i Stockholm d. 13 febr. 1902, sedan han flera
år varit blind. 1843--48 utgaf H. en medicinsk-farmacevtisk
drogsamling och inrättade 1853 i
Stockholm ett museum för naturvetenskap, slöjd
och konst, hvilket uppehölls till 1864, då samlingarna
såldes eller bortskänktes.
Ledamot af Landtbruksakadademin.
H. utöfvade inom sin vetenskap en ganska omfattande verksamhet,
hvaraf frukten återfinnes i periodiska skrifter.
Gift 1854 med Emma Augusta Kristina Härnström.
1858 analyserade Herr Doktor N P Hamberg, Stockholm, Ronneby Brunns vatten.
Avporträtterad av Julius Kronberg 1896–97
Hambergs bror var missionär i Kina.
