Gustaf Kolthoff (1845-1913).
Bara 19 år gammal anställdes Kolthoff som konservator i Skara.
Det var 1864, samma år som konservator Carolina Christiansson började på Uddevalla museum.
Kolthoffs uppdrag var att göra ett skolmuseum. Han lyckades bra och fick senare göra många skolmuseer.
Efter tiden i Skara lockades han av skärgårdens djurliv. Han flyttade till Uddevalla, och 1872 till Källviken i Dragsmark.
Där hade han ateljé, en växande familj och ”sina lyckligaste år”.
Museet i Uddevalla ägde en ganska stor zoologisk samling men saknade många av Skandinaviens fågelarter.
Kolthoff fick i uppdrag av styrelsen att ordna, katalogisera och komplettera. Det betydde samarbete med Carolina Christiansson.
1878 blev Kolthoff konservator vid Uppsala universitets zoologiska institution. Samtidigt drev han en privat ateljé i Uppsala och levererade mängder av monterade djur till skolor och museer.
Bland annat till Vänersborgs läroverk – en samling som låg till grund för stadens museum. Han monterade också de drygt tusen fågelskinn
som Axel W Eriksson skickat från Namibia till det blivande museet i Vänersborg.
Stor beundran väckte Kolthoff med Biologiska Museet i Stockholm. Det skapade han tillsammans med sin son Kjell. Kolthoffs gode vän Bruno Liljefors målade bakgrunderna med olika landskapstyper.
Att visa djuren i sina rätta miljöer, i dioramor, var något nytt!
Kolthoff sågs som landets ledande zoologiska konservator. Han höjde hantverket till en mer konstnärlig och vetenskaplig nivå.
Han var även en av Sveriges främsta fältornitologer. Tillsammans med Leonard Jägerskiöld gav han ut det populärvetenskapliga praktverket ”Nordens fåglar”.
Kolthoff gjorde flera forskningsresor i nordliga farvatten, bland annat till Grönland och Svalbard.

Under åren 1870-1878 var den berömde djurkonservatorn och zoologen Gustaf Kolthoff bosatt i Bohuslän. De två första åren bodde han i Uddevalla och från 1872 i Källviken i Dragsmarks socken. ”Dessa sju år var de lyckligaste i mitt liv” säger han i sina "Minnen”. Gustaf Kolthoff var västgöte och anledningen till att han slog sig ner i Bohuslän var att han sökte nya jaktmarker för sin allt mer omfattande verksamhet som djurkonservator. Närheten till skärgården med dess rika och annorlunda djurliv lockade honom efter att tidigare ha varit verksam i Skara.
Gustaf Kolthoff föddes den 14 december 1845 i Sandhem i Skaraborgs län. Föräldrarna var kommissionslantmätaren Johan Henrik Kolthoff och hans hustru Sara Gustafva Friberger. Släkten kommer från Värmland och ursprungligen från Westfalen i Tyskland. Fadern var en ivrig jägare och det sägs allmänt att det var han som utrotade vargarna i Västergötland.
Det berättas att Gustaf Kolthoff i barnaåren var fysiskt klen och man ansåg att han inte skulle få leva särskilt länge. Familjens husläkare gav då det rådet att befria Gustaf från skolgång. För att styrka hälsan skulle han i stället så mycket som möjligt få vistas utomhus i friska luften. Denna uppmaning åtlydde ”Kolthoffs Gustaf”. Han började redan som 10-åring att jaga och under detta kringströvande levnadssätt, som han skildrat i sina böcker, kom han i första hand att intressera sig för fåglar och däggdjur. Han förvärvade sig en så stor kunskap om fåglar att han räknas som en av 1800-talets skickligaste fältornitologer. Det är märkligt att några av våra mest framstående kännare av den svenska faunan under 1800-talet var bosatta i Västsverige: Llewellyn Lloyd den engelske björnjägaren och författaren till en rad jakt och djurskildringar bodde i Vänersborg, Carl Ulrik Ekström, zoologen från Sörmland, var kyrkoherde i Stenkyrka socken på Tjörn och den berömde fågelmålaren Wilhelm von Wright bodde på Marieberg i Morlanda socken på Orust.
Gustaf Kolthoff hade en naturlig fallenhet att komma ihåg djurens uppträdande i rörelse och vila, en förmåga som han övade upp till ett mästerskap under sina strövtåg i svenska marker. Detta mästerskap skulle senare återspeglas i hans monteringar och framför allt i hans magnum opus Biologiska museet på Djurgården i Stockholm. Härvid bidrog också i hög grad hans vän Bruno Liljefors och inte minst sonen Kjell.
Rektor P.G. Alander i Skara anställde år 1864 Gustaf Kolthoff som konservator med uppdrag att göra ett skolmuseum i staden. Härvid fick Kolthoff tillfälle att studera för den berömde konservatorn Wilhelm Mewes på Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet i Stockholm. Anledningen till att rektor Alander ville ha ett biologiskt museum i Skara var, berättas det, att han vid ett tillfälle hade köpt vad han trodde var en tjäder, som skulle anrättas till en middagsbjudning. När rektorskan fick se fågeln såg hon tvivlande ut - hon hade tillrett tjäder tidigare. Skolans biologilärare tillkallades och kunde genast konstatera att rektorns tjäder var en berguv! Denna händelse påstås vara den yttersta orsaken till att Skara skola fick ett biologiskt museum och att Gustaf Kolthoff fick i uppdrag att utföra detta.
Under Kolthoffs år i Skara växte hans anseende som konservator och det var inte bara Skara skola som fick museum. Kolthoff gjorde museer i många skolor i Sverige bland annat fick Vänersborg en stor samling under 1860-talet. Denna samling överfördes redan på 1890-talet till Vänersborgs museum där den fortfarande finns att se.
År 1870 gifte han sig med Charlotta Beata Lind af Hageby född 1833 i Skövde. Nu slutade han sin anställning som konservator i Skara och ansåg att han kunde m steget att etablera sig som egen företagare. Som tidigare nämnts slog han sig ner i Uddevalla. En orsak till detta var antagligen att han då kunde komma närmare en annan naturtyp än den han tidigare hade lärt känna, nämligen skärgården.
Bohusläns museum (kort därefter kallat Uddevalla museum) tillkom 1861 och han hade redan, tack vare många givare och med den outtröttliga "musei vårdarinna" Karolina Christiansson, fått en ganska stor zoologisk samling. Man saknade dock många av landskapets fågelarter. Uddevalla läroverks rektor J. Rodhe, som var intendent för fågelsamlingen på museet, hade varit i brevkontakt med Kolthoff i början av år 1870. Kolthoff erbjöd då museet att få inköpa ”åtskilliga af honom uppstoppade Foglar, hvilka exponerats i Wenersborg förra året (1869), och beslutade Styrelsen att, enär i samlingen ej fanns något för Museum behöfligt, skrifvelsen skulle lemnas utan afseende.” Sedan Kolthoff hade kommit till Uddevalla blev samarbetet livligare och den 5 februari 1872 uppdrog museistyrelsen åt honom att ordna och katalogisera och även komplettera de zoologiska samlingarna. Den 14 februari samma år var museistyrelsen inbjuden till Kolthoffs bostad på Marieberg för att bese ”Herr Kolthoffs utmärkta samlingar”. Man beslöt då att inköpa 6 st. uppstoppade däggdjur och 54 fåglar till ett pris av 236 Rd Rmt och för detta pris åtog han sig också den tidigare omnämnda katalogiseringen m.m. av samlingarna. Museistyrelsen säges vidare att ”genom ofvanstående inköp, som till större delen består af på Sveriges östra kust förekommande arter, blir Musei samlingar af allmänna djur ganska fullständiga.” Tyvärr har denna förvisso förnämliga samling till största delen gått förlorad.
Hösten 1872 erbjöd Kolthoff museet att få köpa en äggsamling som man dock avböjde. I stället anmodade man honom att upprätta en förteckning över de bohuslänska fåglar som man saknade i samlingarna ”hvarefter Styrelsen skulle bestämma hvad som deraf borde inköpas”. Denna kontakt med Kolthoff fortsatte museet att ha även sedan han flyttat till Källviken i Dragsmark. Varför Kolthoff kom att bosätta sig i Källviken(1) berättar han i Svenska Jägarförbundets nya Tidskrift 1894. Den 24 november 1871 gjorde han tillsammans med ”den raske fiskaren och skicklige seglaren” Helge Olsson på Gåsö, en jakttur till yttre skärgården. Kolthoff berättar:
”Anordningarna för resan var snart undanstökade. Strax efter dagningen lossade vi vår båt i Uddevalla hamn och kryssade för en svag nordvästlig vind över Byfjorden, Havstensfjorden, Kalv-och Koljöfjordarna och kom på e.m. fram till de s.k. Strömmarna, vilka nu under svår motvind, ej var så lätta att komma igenom. Turen var dock med oss, vi hade god ström, som hjälpte oss igenom detta besvärliga farvatten, och snart var vi ute i Getvikesund.
På östra stranden av detta smala sund såg jag ett litet med träd omgivet vitt hus, vars natursköna läge så tilltalade mig, att jag beslöt höra efter om huset var till salu, eller kunde få hyras. Det var detta lilla ställe, som under 7 år blev min bostad och av mig döptes till Källeviken.”
Det var inte bara Gustaf Kolthoff som kom att bo här utan även hans växande familj och det var här som han gjorde sitt första museum och utvecklade de idéer som han sedan skulle förverkliga på annat håll. Dessa sju år i Källviken var de lyckligaste i hans liv, han älskade Bohuslän - mest om vintern - och det är underligt att höra hur hans store föregångare inom djurkunskapen i Bohuslän sörmlänningen Carl Ulrik Ekström, vantrivdes i landskapet så till den grad att han kallar det ”mitt fängelse”, ett otäckare land än detta finns inte, ansåg han.
Samtidigt som Kolthoff bodde på Källviken låg den store fågelmålaren Wilhelm von Wright förlamad och fjättrad vid sin smala säng i verkstaden på Marieberg i Morlanda socken.
Men låt oss återvända till jaktfärden 1871. Från Källviken gick färden vidare till Gåsö där man övernattade hos Helge Olsson. Här fick Kolthoff bo i ett iskallt rum och efter att ha ätit ett torskhuvud som kvällsvard gick han till sängs och vaknade nästa morgon vid att det var full snöstorm - ett oväder som varade i sex dygn. Tiden fördrevs med att läsa bibeln och några årsgamla tidningar. Vädret blev emellertid så småningom bättre och slutligen kunde han gå ut med bössan. Han sköt då en berglärka, en norrländsk flyttfågel, som då var ganska sällsynt i Bohuslän(2). Det var först på sjunde dagen som vädret tillåt någon jakt. Under de följande dagarna sköt han en smådopping, som var mycket sällsynt här vid denna tid, flera småskrakar ”ett stort antal knipor” sju alfåglar, fyra storskarvar, två ejdrar och en storlom samt sköt på en havsörn, som dock undgick att falla offer för Kolthoffs bössa. Det totala jaktbytet efter denna jaktfärd, som varade i ca två veckor uppgick till 75 fåglar(3) och sju av dessa finns utställda i den s.k. Kolthoff-salen på Vänersborgs museum. En tordmule från 28 november finns införd i Bohusläns musei katalog. Hemresan till Uddevalla blev också äventyrlig. På grund av is kunde man inte färdas sjövägen utan man blev tvungen att hyra en häst och en släde och efter en färd som varade i 18 timmar i över 20 graders kyla kom man fram till Uddevalla. Först nästa dag kunde Helge återvända till Gåsö.
För en sentida läsare verkar Kolthoffs skottlistor förfärande. C.F. Lundevall säger att ”det fanns ett särskilt ändamål med varje skott som lossades, att berika kunskaperna om en speciell fågelart, ett vetenskapligt ändamål och så förstås att få föda och kunna överleva. Och tiderna var annorlunda, fågelfaunan tålde ännu, ansågs det, att beskattas. Och knappast sköts en bom, aldrig ett skott i onödan. ”Man skall också komma ihåg att vår tids uppfattning om fridlysning och naturvård vid denna tid inte hade uppstått. Ändå måste man konstatera, att Kolthoff i detta avseende också var långt före sin tid. Om duvhöken säger han:
”Inte rår höken för att han är en hök. Den tänkande människan måste erkäna, att höken har större rättighet att jaga än vi. Vi kunna existera utan att jaga, men ej höken. Vi beundra skickliga jägare, men förakta höken, och dock är han den skickligaste af oss alla. Höken är som roffågel ett så fulländat djur, att vi ej kunna undgå att beundra honom, och för min del vet jag ej en härligare syn än att se en hök jaga en duva. Kastar man en noggrann blick in i naturen, finner man förresten jakt öfver allt. Rofdjuren äro visst icke ensamma derom. I minsta vattenpuss pågår oafbruten jagt, den ene larven jagar den andre, den ene insekten den andre, fiskarne jaga hvarandra eller andra djur, rofflugorna jaga andra flugor, spindeln spänner sitt försåtliga nät för flugorna, våra älskliga sångfåglar jaga dagen igenom insekter, roffåglarna jaga i sin ordning sångfåglarne och slutligen kommer skapelsens herre - menniskan - och jagar dem alla. Hvarför ha vi då större skäl att plåga höken än andra djur”.
Om ormvråken skriver Kolthoff bl.a. att den till största delen lever av gnagare men att den ibland plockar bort en eller annan harunge eller matnyttig fågel och konstaterar att: ”man vet för resten ej, om det skulle vara så nyttigt för våra matnyttiga djur, om alla hans fiender utrotades. Troligen skulle en och annan art efter en sådan åtgärd, åtminstone för en tid, öka sig i hög grad, men omöjligt är ej, att en slapphet hos djurarterna kunde uppkomma och att förökningen deraf inskränktes.”
Han påpekar vidare att alkorna som häckar på otillgängliga klippöar utan fiender endast lägger ett ägg om året medan rapphönan som har fler fiender än de flesta fåglar lägger 20 ägg. ”Att helt och hållet vilja utrota en djurart, kan ej vara någon tänkande menniskas önskan". konstaterar Kolthoff redan på 1890-talet.
År 1877 i februari gjorde Kolthoff en jakttur tillsammans med soldaten Käck. som bodde i närheten av Källviken. De gav sig iväg utan hundar och från det branta berget öster om Källviken upptäckte de ett spår som löpte längs stranden. Först trodde de att det var en räv men efter närmare granskning av spåret kunde Kolthoff konstatera att det var en varg som hade passerat. Man följde spåret, som först gick över isen till Skatholmen där vargen bl.a. hade nosat i ett uttergryt. Den hade dock passerat holmen och fortsatt till Bassholmen och vidare över Snäckedjupet och upp till Koljön. Här hade vargen sökt sig fram till gårdarna där den snokat omkring utan att bli upptäckt. Den hade jagat en räv som emellertid hade flytt in i ett gryt. Vargen hade utan resultat suttit och vaktat utanför en stund och sedan fortsatt. Kolthoff sköt räven, som fortfarande låg och tryckte i grytet. Vargen hade sedan gått vidare ut på Koljöfjordens is och till sist kommit iland på Orust. ”Nu började det snöa och blåsa hård nordlig vind, snön började ryka och det dröjde ej länge, förrän spåret var utplånat. Vi såg det dock i dälderna och fortsatte en stund tills vi i skymningen hade yrväder med full storm och sålunda ej hade annat att göra än att för den dagen afsluta förföljandet”. Man återvände och när de var ute på isen igen fick de vinden i ansiktet och snön piskade. Efter en timme orkade Käck inte längre att gå, men Kolthoff förmådde honom att fortsätta och så småningom kom jägarna tillbaka till Bokenäset där de kunde vila ut i Käcks stuga och vid midnatt fortsatte Kolthoff till Källviken. Vargen hade sedan blivit sedd på Orust och två dagar senare vid Lilla Edet, där den hade rivit en hund och slutligen hade den blivit skjuten i Halland.
I Källviken hade Kolthoff, som tidigare nämnts, satt upp ett biologiskt museum(4) och till detta ville han gärna ha en gammal havsörn. Han visste att ett havsörnpar häckade på Stångenäslandet. Han begav sig dit och fann boet i en hög och brant bergvägg helt nära en bondgård. När han frågade markägaren om han fick skjuta en av örnarna svarade denne: ”Dessa örnar hafva i mina förfäders tid, så långt man har berättelser om dem och deras lif, ynglat här i berget på gårdens egor, och dem får ingen skjuta”. Kolthoff berättar att han högaktade mannens åsikter, men då han visste att en ensam örn snart skaffar sig en ny partner, lyckades han "mot en rätt dryg penningsumma” få tillstånd att skjuta hanen. Kolthoff tog dock miste och fällde honan(5). Därefter lät han hissa sig ner till boet för att ta äggen som dock visade sig vara sönderfrusna. Först efter tre år kom det en ny hona till platsen och markägaren, som under denna tid bittert ångrade att Kolthoff hade fått skjuta örnen sade: ”Kom nu igen och bjud 500 kronor för att få skjuta en örn, om det roar herrn, men örnen får han ej ändå”. Kolthoff räckte mannen handen och sade: ”Om man vill ge mig 500 kr, vill jag ej skjuta en av örnarna”.
År 1872 fick Kolthoff erbjudande att tillsammans med greve Tage Thott på Skabersjö resa till Färöarna och Island. Från denna resa finns bl.a. två toppskarvar från Färöarna och en strömand från Island bevarade på Vänersborgs museum(6). Denna resa inledde en rad färder till nordliga trakter bl.a. deltog han i A.E. Nordenskiölds expedition till Grönland 1883, deltog i en forskningsresa till norska ishavskusten 1887, deltog i A.G. Nathorsts expedition till Spetsbergen och Kung Karls land 1898 och slutligen ledde han en zoologisk expedition till Spetsbergen och nordöstra Grönland 1900. Den sistnämnda resan var en insamlingsresa där man bedrev en intensiv jakt, som i vissa fall kan betraktas som ren utrotning, men man trodde allmänt vid denna tid att naturen var outtömlig och opåverkbar och att tillgången på vilt var obegränsad.
År 1878 flyttade Gustaf Kolthoff med sin familj till Uppsala då han hade erbjudits befattningen som konservator vid zoologiska institutionen vid Uppsala Universitet. Här började han att tillämpa sina redan i Källviken praktiserade idéer om att visa fåglar och däggdjur i sina rätta miljöer i stället för uppradade i montrar. Zoologerna var vid denna tid bosatta i Gustavianum och i den berömda kupolen, där en gång Olof Rudbeck d.ä. hade inrättat sitt Theatrum anatomicum och där Gabriel Marklins samlingar hade förvarats, inrättade nu Gustaf Kolthoff sex dioramor som väckte berättigad uppmärksamhet.
Kolthoffs vän och jaktkamrat grosshandlare C.F. Liljevalch tog omkring 1890 initiativ till att uppföra ett biologiskt museum i Stockholm. Arbetet utfördes av Gustaf Kolthoff och hans son Kjell i samarbete med Bruno Liljefors. Resultatet Biologiska museet på Djurgården stod färdigt år 1893. Här hade han fullt utrymme att förverkliga sitt önskemål - att ge det behandlade museimaterialet ett med naturen Överensstämmande levande utseende. Gustaf Kolthoff skänkte vårt land ett museum av enastående värde där ett koncentrat av Skandinaviens däggdjur och fåglar visas upp och där Liljefors trollat fram ett monumentalt landskap vari utan märkbara övergångar den ena biotopen avlöser den andra. Gustaf och Kjell Kolthoff framställde ytterligare tre dioramor: i Åbo, Uppsala och Södertälje, där man dock frångick metoden med ett rundpanorama.
Under sina sista år utgav Gustaf Kolthoff flera böcker och publicerade viktiga uppsatser i zoologiska ämnen. Tillsammans med Leonard A. Jägersköld, chef för Göteborgs Naturhistoriska Museum, utgav han det stora fågelverket Nordens fåglar, vari Kolthoffs stora fälterfarenhet kunde sammanställas med Jägerskölds teoretiska kunskaper. Tillsammans med sonen Kjell studerade han dessutom under flera år fåglarnas höststräck på Öland. Detta fältarbete resulterade i arbetet Zur Herbstwanderung der nordischen Sumpfvögel über die lnsel Öland 1896.
I Källviken hade han grundat en affärsverksamhet som utvidgades sedan han kommit till Uppsala. Firman ombildades 1910 till ett aktiebolag med namnet Kolthoffs Naturaliemagasin. Efter några år kom denna att driva en omfattande handel med naturalier. Vad som främst kännetecknade Kolthoffs verksamhet var att han höjde det tidigare hantverksmässiga yrket till en hög konstnärlig och vetenskaplig nivå.
Vid Linnéjubileet år 1907 promoverades Gustaf Kolthoff till filosofie hedersdoktor för sina förtjänster som nydanare inom den biologiska museitekniken och som naturvårdare. Gustaf Kolthoff var under sina sista år bosatt i Börje socken i Uppland där han dog den 25 oktober 1913.
Gustaf Kolthoff samlade in och monterade däggdjur, fåglar och fjärilar i hela sitt liv. Museer och skolor fylldes med hans utomordentligt skickligt gjorda monteringar. Tyvärr har en stor del av dessa 1800-talssamlingar nu gått förlorade - samlingar som tillkom med knappa ekonomiska resurser. Det välbärgade 1900-talet anser sig tydligen inte ha råd med att bevara dem eller ens underhålla dem. Docent Yngve Löwegren i Lund får avsluta denna uppsats: ”Den naturtyp som möjliggjorde samlingarnas anskaffande är borta för alltid och möjligheten att ånyo återuppbygga något liknande är försutten. En väsentlig förbättring av de ännu kvarvarande samlingarnas vård är oundgängligen nödvändig”.

Gustaf Kolthoff (1845-1913).
Bara 19 år gammal anställdes Kolthoff som konservator i Skara.
Det var 1864, samma år som konservator Carolina Christiansson började på Uddevalla museum.
Kolthoffs uppdrag var att göra ett skolmuseum. Han lyckades bra och fick senare göra många skolmuseer.
Efter tiden i Skara lockades han av skärgårdens djurliv. Han flyttade till Uddevalla, och 1872 till Källviken i Dragsmark.
Där hade han ateljé, en växande familj och ”sina lyckligaste år”.
Museet i Uddevalla ägde en ganska stor zoologisk samling men saknade många av Skandinaviens fågelarter.
Kolthoff fick i uppdrag av styrelsen att ordna, katalogisera och komplettera. Det betydde samarbete med Carolina Christiansson.
1878 blev Kolthoff konservator vid Uppsala universitets zoologiska institution. Samtidigt drev han en privat ateljé i Uppsala och levererade mängder av monterade djur till skolor och museer.
Bland annat till Vänersborgs läroverk – en samling som låg till grund för stadens museum. Han monterade också de drygt tusen fågelskinn
som Axel W Eriksson skickat från Namibia till det blivande museet i Vänersborg.
Stor beundran väckte Kolthoff med Biologiska Museet i Stockholm. Det skapade han tillsammans med sin son Kjell. Kolthoffs gode vän Bruno Liljefors målade bakgrunderna med olika landskapstyper.
Att visa djuren i sina rätta miljöer, i dioramor, var något nytt!
Kolthoff sågs som landets ledande zoologiska konservator. Han höjde hantverket till en mer konstnärlig och vetenskaplig nivå.
Han var även en av Sveriges främsta fältornitologer. Tillsammans med Leonard Jägerskiöld gav han ut det populärvetenskapliga praktverket ”Nordens fåglar”.
Kolthoff gjorde flera forskningsresor i nordliga farvatten, bland annat till Grönland och Svalbard.

”Detta landskap är skönt om våren, härligt om sommaren, men bäst om vintern”

Under åren 1870-1878 var den berömde djurkonservatorn och zoologen Gustaf Kolthoff bosatt i Bohuslän. De två första åren bodde han i Uddevalla och från 1872 i Källviken i Dragsmarks socken. ”Dessa sju år var de lyckligaste i mitt liv” säger han i sina "Minnen”. Gustaf Kolthoff var västgöte och anledningen till att han slog sig ner i Bohuslän var att han sökte nya jaktmarker för sin allt mer omfattande verksamhet som djurkonservator. Närheten till skärgården med dess rika och annorlunda djurliv lockade honom efter att tidigare ha varit verksam i Skara.
Gustaf Kolthoff föddes den 14 december 1845 i Sandhem i Skaraborgs län. Föräldrarna var kommissionslantmätaren Johan Henrik Kolthoff och hans hustru Sara Gustafva Friberger. Släkten kommer från Värmland och ursprungligen från Westfalen i Tyskland. Fadern var en ivrig jägare och det sägs allmänt att det var han som utrotade vargarna i Västergötland.
Det berättas att Gustaf Kolthoff i barnaåren var fysiskt klen och man ansåg att han inte skulle få leva särskilt länge. Familjens husläkare gav då det rådet att befria Gustaf från skolgång. För att styrka hälsan skulle han i stället så mycket som möjligt få vistas utomhus i friska luften. Denna uppmaning åtlydde ”Kolthoffs Gustaf”. Han började redan som 10-åring att jaga och under detta kringströvande levnadssätt, som han skildrat i sina böcker, kom han i första hand att intressera sig för fåglar och däggdjur. Han förvärvade sig en så stor kunskap om fåglar att han räknas som en av 1800-talets skickligaste fältornitologer. Det är märkligt att några av våra mest framstående kännare av den svenska faunan under 1800-talet var bosatta i Västsverige: Llewellyn Lloyd den engelske björnjägaren och författaren till en rad jakt och djurskildringar bodde i Vänersborg, Carl Ulrik Ekström, zoologen från Sörmland, var kyrkoherde i Stenkyrka socken på Tjörn och den berömde fågelmålaren Wilhelm von Wright bodde på Marieberg i Morlanda socken på Orust.
Gustaf Kolthoff hade en naturlig fallenhet att komma ihåg djurens uppträdande i rörelse och vila, en förmåga som han övade upp till ett mästerskap under sina strövtåg i svenska marker. Detta mästerskap skulle senare återspeglas i hans monteringar och framför allt i hans magnum opus Biologiska museet på Djurgården i Stockholm. Härvid bidrog också i hög grad hans vän Bruno Liljefors och inte minst sonen Kjell.
Rektor P.G. Alander i Skara anställde år 1864 Gustaf Kolthoff som konservator med uppdrag att göra ett skolmuseum i staden. Härvid fick Kolthoff tillfälle att studera för den berömde konservatorn Wilhelm Mewes på Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet i Stockholm. Anledningen till att rektor Alander ville ha ett biologiskt museum i Skara var, berättas det, att han vid ett tillfälle hade köpt vad han trodde var en tjäder, som skulle anrättas till en middagsbjudning. När rektorskan fick se fågeln såg hon tvivlande ut - hon hade tillrett tjäder tidigare. Skolans biologilärare tillkallades och kunde genast konstatera att rektorns tjäder var en berguv! Denna händelse påstås vara den yttersta orsaken till att Skara skola fick ett biologiskt museum och att Gustaf Kolthoff fick i uppdrag att utföra detta.
Under Kolthoffs år i Skara växte hans anseende som konservator och det var inte bara Skara skola som fick museum. Kolthoff gjorde museer i många skolor i Sverige bland annat fick Vänersborg en stor samling under 1860-talet. Denna samling överfördes redan på 1890-talet till Vänersborgs museum där den fortfarande finns att se.
År 1870 gifte han sig med Charlotta Beata Lind af Hageby född 1833 i Skövde. Nu slutade han sin anställning som konservator i Skara och ansåg att han kunde m steget att etablera sig som egen företagare. Som tidigare nämnts slog han sig ner i Uddevalla. En orsak till detta var antagligen att han då kunde komma närmare en annan naturtyp än den han tidigare hade lärt känna, nämligen skärgården.
Bohusläns museum (kort därefter kallat Uddevalla museum) tillkom 1861 och han hade redan, tack vare många givare och med den outtröttliga "musei vårdarinna" Karolina Christiansson, fått en ganska stor zoologisk samling. Man saknade dock många av landskapets fågelarter. Uddevalla läroverks rektor J. Rodhe, som var intendent för fågelsamlingen på museet, hade varit i brevkontakt med Kolthoff i början av år 1870. Kolthoff erbjöd då museet att få inköpa ”åtskilliga af honom uppstoppade Foglar, hvilka exponerats i Wenersborg förra året (1869), och beslutade Styrelsen att, enär i samlingen ej fanns något för Museum behöfligt, skrifvelsen skulle lemnas utan afseende.” Sedan Kolthoff hade kommit till Uddevalla blev samarbetet livligare och den 5 februari 1872 uppdrog museistyrelsen åt honom att ordna och katalogisera och även komplettera de zoologiska samlingarna. Den 14 februari samma år var museistyrelsen inbjuden till Kolthoffs bostad på Marieberg för att bese ”Herr Kolthoffs utmärkta samlingar”. Man beslöt då att inköpa 6 st. uppstoppade däggdjur och 54 fåglar till ett pris av 236 Rd Rmt och för detta pris åtog han sig också den tidigare omnämnda katalogiseringen m.m. av samlingarna. Museistyrelsen säges vidare att ”genom ofvanstående inköp, som till större delen består af på Sveriges östra kust förekommande arter, blir Musei samlingar af allmänna djur ganska fullständiga.” Tyvärr har denna förvisso förnämliga samling till största delen gått förlorad.
Hösten 1872 erbjöd Kolthoff museet att få köpa en äggsamling som man dock avböjde. I stället anmodade man honom att upprätta en förteckning över de bohuslänska fåglar som man saknade i samlingarna ”hvarefter Styrelsen skulle bestämma hvad som deraf borde inköpas”. Denna kontakt med Kolthoff fortsatte museet att ha även sedan han flyttat till Källviken i Dragsmark. Varför Kolthoff kom att bosätta sig i Källviken(1) berättar han i Svenska Jägarförbundets nya Tidskrift 1894. Den 24 november 1871 gjorde han tillsammans med ”den raske fiskaren och skicklige seglaren” Helge Olsson på Gåsö, en jakttur till yttre skärgården. Kolthoff berättar:
”Anordningarna för resan var snart undanstökade. Strax efter dagningen lossade vi vår båt i Uddevalla hamn och kryssade för en svag nordvästlig vind över Byfjorden, Havstensfjorden, Kalv-och Koljöfjordarna och kom på e.m. fram till de s.k. Strömmarna, vilka nu under svår motvind, ej var så lätta att komma igenom. Turen var dock med oss, vi hade god ström, som hjälpte oss igenom detta besvärliga farvatten, och snart var vi ute i Getvikesund.
På östra stranden av detta smala sund såg jag ett litet med träd omgivet vitt hus, vars natursköna läge så tilltalade mig, att jag beslöt höra efter om huset var till salu, eller kunde få hyras. Det var detta lilla ställe, som under 7 år blev min bostad och av mig döptes till Källeviken.”
Det var inte bara Gustaf Kolthoff som kom att bo här utan även hans växande familj och det var här som han gjorde sitt första museum och utvecklade de idéer som han sedan skulle förverkliga på annat håll. Dessa sju år i Källviken var de lyckligaste i hans liv, han älskade Bohuslän - mest om vintern - och det är underligt att höra hur hans store föregångare inom djurkunskapen i Bohuslän sörmlänningen Carl Ulrik Ekström, vantrivdes i landskapet så till den grad att han kallar det ”mitt fängelse”, ett otäckare land än detta finns inte, ansåg han.
Samtidigt som Kolthoff bodde på Källviken låg den store fågelmålaren Wilhelm von Wright förlamad och fjättrad vid sin smala säng i verkstaden på Marieberg i Morlanda socken.
Men låt oss återvända till jaktfärden 1871. Från Källviken gick färden vidare till Gåsö där man övernattade hos Helge Olsson. Här fick Kolthoff bo i ett iskallt rum och efter att ha ätit ett torskhuvud som kvällsvard gick han till sängs och vaknade nästa morgon vid att det var full snöstorm - ett oväder som varade i sex dygn. Tiden fördrevs med att läsa bibeln och några årsgamla tidningar. Vädret blev emellertid så småningom bättre och slutligen kunde han gå ut med bössan. Han sköt då en berglärka, en norrländsk flyttfågel, som då var ganska sällsynt i Bohuslän(2). Det var först på sjunde dagen som vädret tillåt någon jakt. Under de följande dagarna sköt han en smådopping, som var mycket sällsynt här vid denna tid, flera småskrakar ”ett stort antal knipor” sju alfåglar, fyra storskarvar, två ejdrar och en storlom samt sköt på en havsörn, som dock undgick att falla offer för Kolthoffs bössa. Det totala jaktbytet efter denna jaktfärd, som varade i ca två veckor uppgick till 75 fåglar(3) och sju av dessa finns utställda i den s.k. Kolthoff-salen på Vänersborgs museum. En tordmule från 28 november finns införd i Bohusläns musei katalog. Hemresan till Uddevalla blev också äventyrlig. På grund av is kunde man inte färdas sjövägen utan man blev tvungen att hyra en häst och en släde och efter en färd som varade i 18 timmar i över 20 graders kyla kom man fram till Uddevalla. Först nästa dag kunde Helge återvända till Gåsö.
För en sentida läsare verkar Kolthoffs skottlistor förfärande. C.F. Lundevall säger att ”det fanns ett särskilt ändamål med varje skott som lossades, att berika kunskaperna om en speciell fågelart, ett vetenskapligt ändamål och så förstås att få föda och kunna överleva. Och tiderna var annorlunda, fågelfaunan tålde ännu, ansågs det, att beskattas. Och knappast sköts en bom, aldrig ett skott i onödan. ”Man skall också komma ihåg att vår tids uppfattning om fridlysning och naturvård vid denna tid inte hade uppstått. Ändå måste man konstatera, att Kolthoff i detta avseende också var långt före sin tid. Om duvhöken säger han:
”Inte rår höken för att han är en hök. Den tänkande människan måste erkäna, att höken har större rättighet att jaga än vi. Vi kunna existera utan att jaga, men ej höken. Vi beundra skickliga jägare, men förakta höken, och dock är han den skickligaste af oss alla. Höken är som roffågel ett så fulländat djur, att vi ej kunna undgå att beundra honom, och för min del vet jag ej en härligare syn än att se en hök jaga en duva. Kastar man en noggrann blick in i naturen, finner man förresten jakt öfver allt. Rofdjuren äro visst icke ensamma derom. I minsta vattenpuss pågår oafbruten jagt, den ene larven jagar den andre, den ene insekten den andre, fiskarne jaga hvarandra eller andra djur, rofflugorna jaga andra flugor, spindeln spänner sitt försåtliga nät för flugorna, våra älskliga sångfåglar jaga dagen igenom insekter, roffåglarna jaga i sin ordning sångfåglarne och slutligen kommer skapelsens herre - menniskan - och jagar dem alla. Hvarför ha vi då större skäl att plåga höken än andra djur”.
Om ormvråken skriver Kolthoff bl.a. att den till största delen lever av gnagare men att den ibland plockar bort en eller annan harunge eller matnyttig fågel och konstaterar att: ”man vet för resten ej, om det skulle vara så nyttigt för våra matnyttiga djur, om alla hans fiender utrotades. Troligen skulle en och annan art efter en sådan åtgärd, åtminstone för en tid, öka sig i hög grad, men omöjligt är ej, att en slapphet hos djurarterna kunde uppkomma och att förökningen deraf inskränktes.”
Han påpekar vidare att alkorna som häckar på otillgängliga klippöar utan fiender endast lägger ett ägg om året medan rapphönan som har fler fiender än de flesta fåglar lägger 20 ägg. ”Att helt och hållet vilja utrota en djurart, kan ej vara någon tänkande menniskas önskan". konstaterar Kolthoff redan på 1890-talet.
År 1877 i februari gjorde Kolthoff en jakttur tillsammans med soldaten Käck. som bodde i närheten av Källviken. De gav sig iväg utan hundar och från det branta berget öster om Källviken upptäckte de ett spår som löpte längs stranden. Först trodde de att det var en räv men efter närmare granskning av spåret kunde Kolthoff konstatera att det var en varg som hade passerat. Man följde spåret, som först gick över isen till Skatholmen där vargen bl.a. hade nosat i ett uttergryt. Den hade dock passerat holmen och fortsatt till Bassholmen och vidare över Snäckedjupet och upp till Koljön. Här hade vargen sökt sig fram till gårdarna där den snokat omkring utan att bli upptäckt. Den hade jagat en räv som emellertid hade flytt in i ett gryt. Vargen hade utan resultat suttit och vaktat utanför en stund och sedan fortsatt. Kolthoff sköt räven, som fortfarande låg och tryckte i grytet. Vargen hade sedan gått vidare ut på Koljöfjordens is och till sist kommit iland på Orust. ”Nu började det snöa och blåsa hård nordlig vind, snön började ryka och det dröjde ej länge, förrän spåret var utplånat. Vi såg det dock i dälderna och fortsatte en stund tills vi i skymningen hade yrväder med full storm och sålunda ej hade annat att göra än att för den dagen afsluta förföljandet”. Man återvände och när de var ute på isen igen fick de vinden i ansiktet och snön piskade. Efter en timme orkade Käck inte längre att gå, men Kolthoff förmådde honom att fortsätta och så småningom kom jägarna tillbaka till Bokenäset där de kunde vila ut i Käcks stuga och vid midnatt fortsatte Kolthoff till Källviken. Vargen hade sedan blivit sedd på Orust och två dagar senare vid Lilla Edet, där den hade rivit en hund och slutligen hade den blivit skjuten i Halland.
I Källviken hade Kolthoff, som tidigare nämnts, satt upp ett biologiskt museum(4) och till detta ville han gärna ha en gammal havsörn. Han visste att ett havsörnpar häckade på Stångenäslandet. Han begav sig dit och fann boet i en hög och brant bergvägg helt nära en bondgård. När han frågade markägaren om han fick skjuta en av örnarna svarade denne: ”Dessa örnar hafva i mina förfäders tid, så långt man har berättelser om dem och deras lif, ynglat här i berget på gårdens egor, och dem får ingen skjuta”. Kolthoff berättar att han högaktade mannens åsikter, men då han visste att en ensam örn snart skaffar sig en ny partner, lyckades han "mot en rätt dryg penningsumma” få tillstånd att skjuta hanen. Kolthoff tog dock miste och fällde honan(5). Därefter lät han hissa sig ner till boet för att ta äggen som dock visade sig vara sönderfrusna. Först efter tre år kom det en ny hona till platsen och markägaren, som under denna tid bittert ångrade att Kolthoff hade fått skjuta örnen sade: ”Kom nu igen och bjud 500 kronor för att få skjuta en örn, om det roar herrn, men örnen får han ej ändå”. Kolthoff räckte mannen handen och sade: ”Om man vill ge mig 500 kr, vill jag ej skjuta en av örnarna”.
År 1872 fick Kolthoff erbjudande att tillsammans med greve Tage Thott på Skabersjö resa till Färöarna och Island. Från denna resa finns bl.a. två toppskarvar från Färöarna och en strömand från Island bevarade på Vänersborgs museum(6). Denna resa inledde en rad färder till nordliga trakter bl.a. deltog han i A.E. Nordenskiölds expedition till Grönland 1883, deltog i en forskningsresa till norska ishavskusten 1887, deltog i A.G. Nathorsts expedition till Spetsbergen och Kung Karls land 1898 och slutligen ledde han en zoologisk expedition till Spetsbergen och nordöstra Grönland 1900. Den sistnämnda resan var en insamlingsresa där man bedrev en intensiv jakt, som i vissa fall kan betraktas som ren utrotning, men man trodde allmänt vid denna tid att naturen var outtömlig och opåverkbar och att tillgången på vilt var obegränsad.
År 1878 flyttade Gustaf Kolthoff med sin familj till Uppsala då han hade erbjudits befattningen som konservator vid zoologiska institutionen vid Uppsala Universitet. Här började han att tillämpa sina redan i Källviken praktiserade idéer om att visa fåglar och däggdjur i sina rätta miljöer i stället för uppradade i montrar. Zoologerna var vid denna tid bosatta i Gustavianum och i den berömda kupolen, där en gång Olof Rudbeck d.ä. hade inrättat sitt Theatrum anatomicum och där Gabriel Marklins samlingar hade förvarats, inrättade nu Gustaf Kolthoff sex dioramor som väckte berättigad uppmärksamhet.
Kolthoffs vän och jaktkamrat grosshandlare C.F. Liljevalch tog omkring 1890 initiativ till att uppföra ett biologiskt museum i Stockholm. Arbetet utfördes av Gustaf Kolthoff och hans son Kjell i samarbete med Bruno Liljefors. Resultatet Biologiska museet på Djurgården stod färdigt år 1893. Här hade han fullt utrymme att förverkliga sitt önskemål - att ge det behandlade museimaterialet ett med naturen Överensstämmande levande utseende. Gustaf Kolthoff skänkte vårt land ett museum av enastående värde där ett koncentrat av Skandinaviens däggdjur och fåglar visas upp och där Liljefors trollat fram ett monumentalt landskap vari utan märkbara övergångar den ena biotopen avlöser den andra. Gustaf och Kjell Kolthoff framställde ytterligare tre dioramor: i Åbo, Uppsala och Södertälje, där man dock frångick metoden med ett rundpanorama.
Under sina sista år utgav Gustaf Kolthoff flera böcker och publicerade viktiga uppsatser i zoologiska ämnen. Tillsammans med Leonard A. Jägersköld, chef för Göteborgs Naturhistoriska Museum, utgav han det stora fågelverket Nordens fåglar, vari Kolthoffs stora fälterfarenhet kunde sammanställas med Jägerskölds teoretiska kunskaper. Tillsammans med sonen Kjell studerade han dessutom under flera år fåglarnas höststräck på Öland. Detta fältarbete resulterade i arbetet Zur Herbstwanderung der nordischen Sumpfvögel über die lnsel Öland 1896.
I Källviken hade han grundat en affärsverksamhet som utvidgades sedan han kommit till Uppsala. Firman ombildades 1910 till ett aktiebolag med namnet Kolthoffs Naturaliemagasin. Efter några år kom denna att driva en omfattande handel med naturalier. Vad som främst kännetecknade Kolthoffs verksamhet var att han höjde det tidigare hantverksmässiga yrket till en hög konstnärlig och vetenskaplig nivå.
Vid Linnéjubileet år 1907 promoverades Gustaf Kolthoff till filosofie hedersdoktor för sina förtjänster som nydanare inom den biologiska museitekniken och som naturvårdare. Gustaf Kolthoff var under sina sista år bosatt i Börje socken i Uppland där han dog den 25 oktober 1913.
Gustaf Kolthoff samlade in och monterade däggdjur, fåglar och fjärilar i hela sitt liv. Museer och skolor fylldes med hans utomordentligt skickligt gjorda monteringar. Tyvärr har en stor del av dessa 1800-talssamlingar nu gått förlorade - samlingar som tillkom med knappa ekonomiska resurser. Det välbärgade 1900-talet anser sig tydligen inte ha råd med att bevara dem eller ens underhålla dem. Docent Yngve Löwegren i Lund får avsluta denna uppsats: ”Den naturtyp som möjliggjorde samlingarnas anskaffande är borta för alltid och möjligheten att ånyo återuppbygga något liknande är försutten. En väsentlig förbättring av de ännu kvarvarande samlingarnas vård är oundgängligen nödvändig”.

A 1336 Ejder, Somateria mollissima, hona, ad. Bohusläns skärgård 6.12. 1871 . Dessa fåglar finns f.n. utställda på Vänersborgs museum. Kolthoffsamlingen i Vänersborg uppgår till 287 nr och tillhörde ursprungligen Vänersborgs läroverk, men överfördes till museet omkring 1890.
4 Denna samling uppgick till 372 nr fördelat på 231 arter. 139 nr kom från trakten och 39 från Källviken. Insamlingen var gjord mellan 3.1.1871 och 1.6.1876 enligt ”Katalog öfver fogelsamlingen i Kolthoffs ornithologiska Museum”, Uddevalla 1876.
5 Denna havsörn har katalognummer 17 i Kolthoffs katalog och anges vara en gammal hona från ”Vadfjället i Sotenäs 25/4 1875”.
