August Wilhelm Malm (1821-1882).

Dokument i Enskilda arkiv; arkivnummer 141, Thorburnska papperen Uddevalla. L Lloyd Norway, berättelse 1826 med mera. F5:
AVI-FAUNA of SOUTH-WESTERN AFRICA by CHARLES J. ANDERSSON, author of ”Lake Ngami;2 ” The Okavango river,” & c., &c.
Under the above title it is proposed to publish, in 3 volumes, royal octo. (handsomely bound in cloth, and with a sketch map of the various countries treated of ), an accurate description of all the Birds met with by the Author during his travels and researches; and otherwise observed between the Orange River, Cunene, Okavango, Teouge, and the Lake Ngami country, for the last 15 years.
This great work will be illustrated by upwards of 450 plates in tinted lithography, or, if sufficient public support be guaranteed, in chromo-lithography, after drawings by WOLF and BAINES, and executed under the Author’s own immediate supervision. As many of these facimile drawings have been made as soon as possible after death, ere the rich glow of living tints has been lost, they will furnish a series of illustrations of unrivalled interest and value to every lover of nature; there will be in addition about 900 pages of letter-press, concerning the history, habits, nidification, &c., of close upon 500 birds ; accompanied with accurate portraits of the plants, trees, and general aspect of the country to which these Birds are more or less indigenous, thus showing at a glance each creature and its habitat.
At a cost of £3,000, Messrs. DAY & SON, the eminent lithographers, have agreed to publish this work in their best style. To be secured for this outlay they require a guarantee of 500 subscribers at 5 guineas each ; and it therefore remains with the public to decide, whether for a comparatively moderate sum, they will secure for themselves, or not, a. trustworthy record of the many very interesting, new, and beautiful forms of the feathered creation peculiar to South-Western Africa.
As the Author cannot hope to reap any pecuniary benefit from the sale of this work, he appeals confidently to the Cape public for support and encouragement in his arduous undertaking, not only on the ground of its general interest to the man of science, the student, and the lover of the picturesque, but also on the plea of its being the crowning work of one who has shattered his health and damaged his fortune while in hot pursuit of materials which it has cost him many years of toil and hardship to collect; and who is, therefore, loth to see the labour of a life wasted for want of the means to utilize its products.
Specimen Drawings in oil and water-colours for this work may be seen by applying to Mr. MASKEW, at the Public Library, where also Subscription Lists will lie, as well as at Messrs. SOLOMON & Co.’s, JUTA, the Exchange, Banks, and Office of the Argus, Advertiser and Mail, &c.
A Single Subscription will be Five Guineas.
1827: Karl Johan Andersson föddes i Värmland. Han gick i skola i Vänersborg.
1847: Karl Johan tog studenten. Han fortsatte med zoologistudier på Lunds universitet. Ornitologins fader, professor Sven Nilsson, undervisade honom.
Paret fick fyra barn.
Hans assistent från Vänersborg, Axel W Eriksson, begravde honom i väglöst land några kilometer in i nuvarande Angola.
Det ornitologiska verket Notes of the Birds of Damara Land and the Adjacent Countries of South-West Africa kom ut i bantat skick.
