Knoppölflaskorna tillverkades under den tid de var munblåsta i den tredelade form som disponent J.P Jönsson, Liljedals Glasbruk i Värmland (1761 – 1917), fick patenterad 1852.
Arbetet mot en standard för ölflaskorna inleddes när automatiska tappnings-anordningar introducerades. Den första knoppölflaskan skall enligt uppgift från Svenska Bryggareföreningens arkiv ha tillverkats 1881 och de första försöken med flaskan gjordes i samarbete med Hammars Glasbruk i Närke (1854 – 1930). Arbetet med den nya typen av ölflaska baserades på metersystemet, som sedan 1869 kom att ligga tillgrund för allt varuutbyte. Flaskan skulle vara lätt att göra ren, den skulle kunna återanvändas och den skulle förslutas med naturkork.
Den standardiserade flaskan kom först att godkännas av Stockholms Bryggare 1884, Svenska Bryggareföreningen godkände den 1886. Flaskan tillverkades i tre storlekar; 2/3-, 1/3- samt 1/6 liter. Färgen på flaskan var ljusbrun, såpass ljus att man skulle kunna ha möjlighet att syna innehållet och så mörk att ljuset inte skulle påverka ölen.
Den första maskinen för tillverkning av glasflaskor installerades på Buteljglasbruket i Hammar 1909. Stora vinster kunde göras då flaskorna gjordes i ett moment utan att man behövde lägga på ringen "knoppen" senare, som man fick göra vid munblåsning. De andra glasbruken installerade också flaskmaskiner efter några år.
Knoppölsflaskorna märktes med tre "*" samt undertill respektive glasbruks bokstav. Arboga och Årnäs märkte med två st "*" samt med volymstorlek 2/3-, 1/3- eller 1/6 Lit. Flaskor tillverkade före 1890 har hela ordet "Liter" på bröstet. Troligtvis var detta för att folk skulle lära sig att använda "liter" i stället för det föråldrade "stop".
Fr.o.m. år 1900 märktes knoppölflaskan med årtal. De märktes då i botten med 1900+1 och så vidare. Förutom årtalsmärkningen fanns också en märkning som angav vilket arbetslag som tillverkad flaskan, möjligen en tidig kvalitetssäkringsåtgärd. En del glasbruk skrev även ut glasbrukets namn i botten på flaskan.
1922 kom märkningen med en gemen bokstav under glasbruksmärkningen.
Flaskor som är tillverkade 1930 till 1932 har omväxlande knopp och alkamynningsring, d.v.s. knoppen har ersatts med en mynningsring för aluminiumkapsyl, [ALKA - ALuminiumKApsyl].
Fram till 1942 fanns knoppölflaskorna i återvinningssystemet, därefter togs de ur systemet.
