Leif Hellström genomförde värnplikten 1977-78 vid Södermanlands regemente, P10 i Strängnäs. Totalt blev det tolv månaders utbildningstid samt tre repetitionsmöten som stabstroppchef. Alltmer teknisk utbildning ju längre tiden gick vilket innebar koppling i telefonstationer, dra telefontråd, använda radio osv.
Utbildningen som rörde armbindeln gällde beredskapstjänst och han tjänstgjorde cirka två gånger vid olika tillfällen under vardera 24 timmar i beredskapstroppen (BERTO). Vanligt bland värnpliktiga på alla regementen i Sverige att genomgå beredskapstjänsten. De skulle finnas i beredskap om något hände innanför eller utanför grindarna, högre officerare bestämde uppdragen. Under hans tidiga tjänstgöring i mitten av 1977 fick bara befälselever genomgå utbildningen men sedan breddades det, mindes Hellström. Själv gick han PBS, dvs Plutonbefälsskolan och blev sergeant.
Hände något skulle man snabbt finnas redo och utrustad för uppdraget. Kunde röra sig om larm från ett mobiliseringsförråd utanför regementet, nödlandning av främmande flygplan eller större olycka. Var troppen borta under längre tid fick nästa tropp göra sig redo att ersätta dem på plats. De höll till i ett rum i kasernvakten vid huvudgrinden. Under tjänstgöringen hade man armbindeln på sig. Armbindeln skulle egentligen lämnas in men hamnade hemma i byrålådan istället.
