Birger Isbergs föremål från hans verksamhet under andra världskriget. Radion går endast att motta sändningar med och utvecklades av den norske motståndsmannen Willy Simonsen. Simonsen flydde till Storbritannien 1942 och började arbeta för Inter Services Research Bureau. Under sin exil i Storbritannien framtogs radiomottagaren i syfte att användas av brittiska SOE – Special Operations Executive, som bland annat ägnade sig åt sabotageuppdrag. Det ansågs viktigt att tillverka en liten och smidig radiomottagare som även kunde drivas med batterier lätta att få tag på och som inte drog så mycket energi. Radion gick under smeknamnet ”Sweetheart” och ursprunget kommer troligen från minnet av en ung kvinna som arbetade i projektet tillsammans med Simonsen. Militära standardkomponenter fick inte användas i produkten utan istället skulle främst materiel som redan fanns ute på den civila marknaden tas i anspråk. Det anlitade företaget Hale Electric Co. Ltd tillverkade uppskattningsvis 50 000 radiomottagare av den här typen. Den var billig att framställa och kostnaden låg endast omkring 8 brittiska pund per styck. Cirka 5 000 enheter gavs till den norska exilregeringen i Storbritannien och vidarebefordrades till hemlandet genom att i hemlighet släppas från flygplan över det ockuperade Norge. Några exemplar fanns alltså även på den svenska sidan gränsen. Svenska jägarbataljonen vid I19 transporterade utrustningen märkt med diplomatpost till respektive bas på den svenska sidan.
Den organiserade norska motståndsrörelsen leddes från exilregeringen i London under namnet MILORG och hade under våren 1945 omkring 40 000 beväpnade personer i organisationen på plats i Norge, utrustade bland annat med radiomottagare 31/1. De ägnade sig åt både sabotageverksamhet mot den tyska ockupationsmakten och förberedde andra aktiviteter för att motverka nazisternas inflytande i landet. SOE släppte även ned den här typen av mottagare över andra delar av det ockuperade Europa och därför kallades paketen även för ”Propaganda Set”. Användningsområdet var framför allt att lyssna på BBC:s nyhetssändningar vilket var viktigt för att få lägesrapporter från Europa. BBC rapporterade nämligen både om krigets framsteg och bakslag sett ur britternas perspektiv, utan att avslöja exakta positioner med mera. Motståndaren skulle inte få onödig hjälp. Det kunde även sändas kodade meddelanden genom de brittiska radiosändningarna där endast lyssnare med förkunskap kunde tyda var utrustning skulle släppas mm. Blev någon påkommen med att lyssna på BBC i de tyskockuperade länderna riskerade de dödsstraff. I exempelvis Polen var till och med själva innehavet av radiomottagare starkt reglerat.
Radiomottagarens frekvens sträcker sig mellan 6 till 12 MHz. Den drivs av ett HT-batteri på 20 volt med en drifttid på 150-200 timmar samt ett 4,5 V LT-batteri som ska bytas var 50:e timme. Istället för större hörlurar och för att hålla nere batteritiden beställdes kristallhörlurar i form av små öronpluggar från USA. De förpackades i små runda tobaksdosor för att klara nedsläpp från flygplan.
Till exemplaret medföljer även originallådan med instruktioner på engelska att radion inte ska flygas på en höjd över 5 000 meter om den inte är hermetiskt tillsluten eftersom det kan påverka utrustningen negativt, särskilt de medpackade små hörlurarna: ”Not to be flown above 15 000 feet unless hermetically sealed”. Instruktion på norska i tunn plåt är fastsatt på mottagarens framsida. Radion i fråga fungerar fortfarande. Föremålet märkt med etikett från Gunnar Isberg men som ett par år före sin död hävdade att det främst var Birger som använt radion, enligt sonen Jan.
Under sista åren av kriget inrättades minst fem allierade underrättelsebaser i den svenska fjällvärlden intill norska gränsen. Baserna var hemliga och kopplade till de allierade ansträngningarna att understödja den norska motståndsrörelsen och åter ta kontrollen över det tyskockuperade Norge. Ytterligare fem baser fanns på norska sidan och hela verksamheten gick under namnet Operation Sepals (latin för foderblad på blomma). Amerikaner, britter, norrmän och svenskar var involverade i den här verksamheten. Baserna underställdes avdelningen Westfield Mission inom OSS vid USA:s ambassad i Stockholm.
Birger Isberg använde utrustningen då han spanade mot tyska ställningar i Norge från den svenska sidan i Norrbotten.
Med hjälp av norska kurirer och radioutrustning försökte Birger och hans två bröder bilda sig en lägesbild av Nazitysklands agerande och pågående operationer i det ockuperade Norge. Kirunabröderna Fahle (1909-1977) Birger (1917-2015) och Gunnar Isberg (1923-2017) var knutna till den svenska militära hemliga underrättelseorganisationen C-byrån (Centralbyrån) som vid tillfället leddes av Carl Petersén. Birger Isberg fungerade bland annat som hemlig kurir vid sidan om sin officiella anställning vid Tullverket. 1941 ryckte han in vid I19 i Boden och verkade som fänrik vid Skidlöparbataljonen 1944 där fler personer också skötte kuriruppdrag till och från Sepalsbaserna. Birger åkte till och från Stockholm på C-byråns uppdrag med tåg och förde motståndsmän till de olika platserna i Norrbotten. Fahle utnyttjade sina språkkunskaper i tolkuppdrag och förklädde sig ofta som same på strapatserna. Den yngsta brodern Gunnar studerade ännu på gymnasiet men hade trots det vissa mindre uppgifter i verksamheten, även om han inte officiellt var knuten till C-byrån som sina äldre bröder.
Redan 1943 sattes bröderna Isberg genom C-byrån i kontakt med brittiska underrättelsetjänsten SIS/MI6 och norska hemliga motsvarigheten, XU. Uppdraget bestod i att sända rapporter om Tysklands förehavanden i Nordnorge till C-byrån och till norska samarbetspartners. Samma år var de drivande i upprättandet av Karibasen, den första allierade underrättelsestationen på svensk mark som egentligen var en fristående norsk kommunikationscentral. Under 1944 fortsatte utbyggnaden av provisoriska baser i fjällstugor på svenskt område och här kom bröderna att bli viktiga aktörer i verksamheten. I föräldrahemmet på Brytaregatan i Kiruna samlades och gömdes företrädare för den norska motståndsrörelsen innan de skulle vidare på kuriruppdrag till de olika baserna på både svensk och norsk sida. Utbildningen vid baserna sköttes av brittiska SOE och det mesta av utrustning och vapen finansierades av amerikanska OSS, föregångaren till CIA. Det ingick utbildning i minsprängning och sabotageverksamhet för norska medborgare inför en tysk kapitulation i Norge. 2002 hedrades bröderna Fahle, Gunnar och Birger Isberg under en ceremoni av USA:s tidigare försvarsattaché för sina insatser under kriget. Som tack fick de även varsin plakett med inskrift från USAAF och OSS.
Förvärven består av en radiomottagare, ett gult häfte ”Hvad Enhver N.S.-mann bör vite” (1943), en brittisk snöblus, inskrivningsbok (1937-), vit kamouflagebyxa av schweizisk import, svensk snöblus, en brittisk förvaringssäck, Birgers fältryggsäck, dricksflaska, livrem, frihetsmedalj samt diverse dokumentation. Den brittiska snöblusen användes under uppdragen i Naimakka liksom helt säkert radiomottagaren, ryggsäcken och troligen förvaringssäcken. De övriga snödräkterna, livremmen och dricksflaskan kommer från tjänstgöringstiden vid I 19. Birgers renskrivna anteckningar finns bifogade i separata dokument.
Birger fortsatte efter kriget sin tjänstgöring vid Tullverket ända till sin pension omkring 1983. Han avled i juni 2015, 98 år gammal.
