Text in English: The sculpture group comprises 27 sculptures depicting warrior figures clad in Roman armour of varied design, with or without helmets, holding weapons and/or shields in their hands. From a constructional point of view the warriors are related to the sculpture of David and the two Hercules figures.
There were originally 28 sculptures in the group. The sculpture, positioned between 05896 and 05900, at the quarter gallery, starboard side, has not been found.
Location on ship
The lower part of the lower stern gallery. The warrior is placed upon a console head.
Iconography
The sculpture leaves a classical impression. The faithful rendering of the armour, in all its details reveals that the artists worked from graphic models either in the form of reproduced copper-plates or woodcuts of the Roman antiquities or drawings by contemporary renaissance artists.
Roman warrior figures are an important part of decorative renaissance art. They frequently provide a physical embodiment of the time''''s devotion to antiquity and efforts to relive the ancient ideal and the classical form. The Roman armour represented in itself a set of inherent values; indeed it supplied the inevitable prop in the depiction of the classical Hero.
The appearance of the warriors in Roman armour on the Vasa''''s lower stern and quarter galleries can be seen as part of the seventeenth-century devotion to antiquity when classical heroism and virtue were embodied in art form. Their prescence on the Vasa can also be explained in a more concrete way. The warriors do not have any special objects or attributes that identify them with any historical or mythical personages from classical antiquity, or a particular classical literary motif, but the warriors are equipped with different kinds of shields and weapons. The warriors, therefore, may be seen simply as soldiers, perhaps representing or symbolizing the King''''s army used for his Polish war, or to be used to support the German Protestants. But they may also be identified with King David''''s soldiers. The most famous Israelite king is the centre figure of the lower stern gallery, flanked on either side by three warriors and subsequently by the warriors along the quarter galleries on each side of the aftercastle. Such an interpretation, based upon the positions of David and the warriors, is analogous to the interpretation of the upper gallery warriors being identified with the soldiers of the Israeli leader Gideon.
